Tamayaki: A pop of pure Japanese fun and flavor

The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Tamayaki’s main dish is takoyaki, a ball-shaped Japanese snack made with wheat-flour batter and diced octopus, shredded greens and topped with bonito flakes and a special sauce.

Tamayaki is owned by hip young sisters Justine, Jamie and Julanne Uy, and Jorina Uy-Atmady.  Tamayaki has a big following in China, Australia, Spain, Indonesia, Malaysia, and now the Philippines.

Tamayaki opened its first store on P. Guevara Street in San Juan. The store offers several takoyaki variants, from the authentic seasoned octopus to other variants like the kani and shrimp, squid satay, kani and mozzarella, grilled steak, chicken teriyaki, mussels and cheese, smoked mackerel, ham and mozzarella, fish fillet, Korean pork BBQ, and double cheese.  Each takoyaki order is prepared fresh.  It is served with sauces ranging from traditional takoyaki sauce to spicy-sweet satay.

The store also offers flavored tea drinks on the menu. There are 34 milk teas, plain tea and a juice drink to choose from.  Among the most popular are the matcha milk tea with adzuki bean made with green tea and chewy red beans; blueberry pop ball, which is filled with jelly balls; and the sake milk tea with rice ball made with Japanese sake, milk and traditional tea topped with glutinous rice.

It is no wonder that in just one year, Tamayaki now has five branches located at SM North EDSA, Fishermall Quezon Avenue, Landmark, Makati and SM Fairview.  Tamayaki also offers franchise packages for as low as P75, 000.
