Manila is one of Asia's 10 greatest street food cities

Ruth Sindico - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Where can you find some of the greatest street foods in Asia? In Manila, of course.

Whether it's the deep-fried pork rind that is the chicharon or the fertilized duck egg that is the balut (or as one New York Times writer calls it, the "Franken-snack"), the city serves the best street dishes in the continent, according to a listing made by Cable News Networks' travel website CNNgo.

"Whenever possible, foods are deep-fried, which makes them that much more mouth-watering and, as a bonus, kills germs," CNNgo's Lina Goldberg observes of Filipino street food.

CNNgo lists the country's top ten street dishes as follows: chicharon, taho, balut, kwek kwek, silog, isaw, kikiam, banana cue and fish balls.

It also goes on to recommend where they can be best enjoyed, complete with a detailed map.

While the article identifies Manila as the center of street food haven in the country, some of the street food it mentioned can be found in Quezon City (isaw at the University of the Philippines Diliman and silog at Banchetto Shopwise) and Pateros (balut).

The other great street food cities in Asia according to CNNgo are Penang, Taipei, Bangkok, Fukuoka, Hanoi, Singapore, Seoul, Xi'an and Phnom Penh.
