Hungry? Hail a Yellow Cab in the Citi

OOH LA LAI - Lai S. Reyes - The Philippine Star

Innovative, quick casual restaurant Yellow Cab Pizza Co. allows harried diners to start their day right with a hot, delish, and filling treat: My Size Breakfast Pizza.

Served nicely folded in half with all the breakfast goodies inside — Ham, Salami and Egg; Hungarian Sausage and Egg; and Bacon, Mango and Egg — the delectable fare is the newest addition to Yellow Cab’s My Size Folded Pizza line. Just grab a pack and you’re good to go! The Bacon, Mango and Egg combo tastes so good I keep coming back for more. I love bacon and eggs, but I never thought mangoes would further enhance their flavors.

Yellow Cab’s My Size Folded Pizzas are designed not only for people-on-the-go, but also for solo diners who want to have that Yellow Cab experience, too. Yellow Cab’s American-sized pizza and pasta dishes are good for sharing. So, if you’re dining alone, there’s no way you could down even a 10-inch pizza, so you’ll end up in another resto.

“When we observed our market, we noticed that those who frequent Yellow Cab come in groups, either with their family or friends. So we felt it was time to offer a product that would also cater to individual diners. But instead of coming up with a six-inch solo pizza, we thought of folding it for a change,” explains Roy Marvin E. Quejada, chief operating officer, Yellow Cab Pizza Co.

New York-Style Pizza, Pasta And More

Of all of New York’s symbols, this one truly reflects the dynamism and fast pace of the city that never sleeps: the yellow cab.

And true to form, you’ll feel that New York vibe as soon as you step into any of the Yellow Cab stores in the metro — the logo, the retro-industrial ambience, the large photographs that adorn the “unfinished” walls, the upbeat music, and the aroma of freshly baked pizza dough. So imagine my surprise when I found out two years ago that Yellow Cab is a Filipino brand, conceptualized and made by Pinoys who couldn’t get enough of the great taste of NY pizza.

“I guess one of the reasons why a lot of people thought Yellow Cab was a foreign brand is because our pizzas taste just like how a New York pizza should be: a slice filled with toppings and so big you have to fold it lengthwise to bite into it. Another important factor is that our pizzas are made of the freshest and premium ingredients,” enthuses Quejada.

Yellow Cab Goes Global

Yellow Cab Pizza Co., which was acquired by Pancake House late last year, put up the pizza place 11 years ago and today has 92 local branches, four in Qatar, and two in Malaysia.

“When Pancake House acquired Yellow Cab, we only had 83 branches. So, in a span of less than a year, we’ve grown by leaps and bounds. The thrust of Pancake House is to put up more stores abroad,” shares Quejada.

For its branch in Malaysia, Yellow Cab had to make it halal because it’s a requirement.

“But in terms of flavor, it’s basically the same,” notes Quejada. For example, with the Manhattan Meat Lover, they use chicken ham and beef bacon instead of pork.

And to thank its loyal diners for their continued support, Yellow Cab has partnered with Citibank in its Citi Dining Privileges program.

“The Citi Dining Privileges is a program that gives Citibank cardholders perks at select dining places not only in the Philippines but all over Asia as well,” explains Tina Perez, Citibank VP.

Citibank cardholders who dine at Yellow Cab will get a 10-percent discount for every P900 single food purchase (excluding drinks) until January 2013.

And from Aug. 2 to 18, Citi cardholders get any two 14-inch pizzas for only P900 using their Citibank credit card. Diners can enjoy as much as 30-percent savings. The promo is valid on Thursdays to Saturdays only.

“At Citibank, we want to give our clients offers that are truly irresistible, just like what Yellow Cab is giving them now,” enthused Perez.

Citibank’s Dining Privileges program, which runs for over two years now, is such a hit with Citibank cardholders.

Citi does guarantee that it is offering the best deals with its partner restaurants. In the unlikely event that the same restaurant is offering a better deal with another credit card company, Citi will gladly reimburse the difference.

“At Yellow Cab, we know what Citibank stands for: quality and superb customer service. It all boils down to one thing: customer satisfaction. We want our customers to feel good when they leave our restos,” says Roy Quejada, chief operating officer, Yellow Cab Pizza Co.

Over the years, Yellow Cab has innovated its menu. Aside from the My Size Folded Pizza, they also offer the rolled pizza, popularly known as Dear Darla, which has alfalfa sprouts and arugula. This flavor is a hit not only with vegetarians but also those who are watching their weight. Cheese lovers can indulge in the 4-Cheese pizza, which is loaded with Mozzarella, cheddar, Romano, and feta cheeses.

Other must-try items are the Charlie Chan chicken pasta with chicken strips, shiitake mushrooms, and roasted peanuts sautéed in a spicy oriental sauce; the baked potato wedges, which boasts zero grams trans fat; and the cream of squash soup, which is soup-er healthy and tastes really good, too.

Don’t leave the resto without trying the Corona Chicken Salsa, a pizza that comes with all the great toppings and a wedge of lime, which you squeeze all over the topping just like a bottle of Corona beer.
