Excuse us while we kiss the sky!

As chosen by the general music-loving public through SMS voting via Smart, the top three bands in Pulp magazine’s 2006 Philippine division of the World Battle of the Bands, namely Manila-based heavy metal act Queso, Cavite’s underground extreme metal outfit Sin, and Faspitch (who hail from Cebu) started doing the rounds with the competition’s official tour, where audiences will once again be able to catch them live and vote for their favorite before the grand finals night to be held on Oct. 5 at the SM Mall of Asia.

And on one particular night, Sept. 27, the evening before Typhoon Milenyo rampaged through Manila, lucky Pulp and music fans were given a chance to witness an assault by Queso and Sin who were more than eager to throw down the gauntlet and crank up the metal as both acts pushed on with the second installment of the WBOB tour, to an modest yet fanatical crowd. Purple Haze, one of the newer homes of local music of the loud kind, welcomed the bands and guests with evening sponsors Jagermeister with free shots of the popular drink, and Smart, who provided a setup that endured the rain and strong winds, and that showcased their latest promos and great deals exclusively for the lucky music lovers who showed up.

At the beginning of the festivities, it was rock ’n’ roll torch-bearers Wall of Sound who set the mood, with the throbbing sounds of, who else, but Jimi Hendrix in subtle homage to the venue. With the guitar-through-cranked-up-Marshalls sound of former The Breed axeman Manny Amador wailing away, his bandmates took his cue and pulled out all the stops with more covers as members of Cheese and Sin looked on and observed how it was done back in the day.

Yet audiences couldn’t wait any longer, as Pulp’s very own Fifa Musngi served as the evening’s host, and introduced Sin, who played a mind-blowing set of originals, including the WBOB entry Amorphosis. As vocalist Charles Daza thundered and bellowed through the sludgefest of down-picked rhythms courtesy of bandmates Macoy Manuel (drums), Alvin Quiñones (bass) and guitarists Gil Christ Tan and Rommel Vasquez, even the musicians present that evening could not help but be impressed as the complicated time signatures complemented the louder-than-loud approach the band has been known for. Currently, Sin is in the studio recording their full-length follow-up to their last EP "Pilgrimage," and are building a strong cult following in underground metal scenes all over the archipelago and even among established musicians’ circles.

Not to be outdone, Queso proceeded with yet another ear-punishing set, which was characterized by trade-offs between discordant riffs and highly melodic vocals, a trademark that has earned them a legion of fans in and even outside the country. Playing material off their recently released third full-length (which was lauded by critics as their strongest and most technical release to date), the band showed a healthy, unflinching attitude when they took the stage and simply went off like a bomb. Vocalist Ian Tayao sang like there was no tomorrow, and the rest of the band offered a flurry of slabs and slabs of texture, combining modern rock with classic rock influences and sensibilities outside the genre. Easily, you could tell it was a fitting end to the gig as the rain continued to pound the Quezon City evening streets.

As all votes have been placed back to zero after the preliminary voting period, fans of Queso, Sin, and Faspitch are urged to choose their champion. A champion that will represent the Philippines in the WBOB World Final to be held tentatively on Nov. 25 in Hong Kong, where the best of the best in Asia and from the US and New Zealand will battle it out for the title of being "the best band in the world" for 2006. Fans of the three bands (who also happen to be Smart subscribers) can help Sin, Queso, or Faspitch to go for the gold by texting VOTE <band code> and sending it to 286. For band codes, music lovers can avail of the September issue of Pulp magazine which includes a free WBOB CD, or either get it for free with minimum purchases at the SM Boys’ Teens’ Wear department or get one with every paid SMART Bro application or for every SMART Buddy SIM purchase with a minimum load of Php30 Eload.

The 2006 Philippine division of the World Battle of the Bands Grand Finals night will be on Oct. 5 at the Music Hall of the SM Mall of Asia, when people will finally get to meet their champion! Vote now!
