Recover in style at this resto-bar
October 5, 2006 | 12:00am
There is a new restaurant being touted as the next in place, somewhere to see and be seen. Even before it opened, the whole of Bulacan was already agog at the character and novelty the restaurant would supposedly offer. It has a catchy name: The Recovery Room Restaurant and Bar. The name has a double meaning, since the restaurant is located in front of the Santos Clinic along McArthur Highway.
The owners of Recovery Room are Charles and Sherill Harris. Sherill, a Pampanga native, has for a number of years worked in the restaurant and entertainment industry in Hong Kong and Singapore. Charles is a transplanted American, born in Texas and raised in New York. He has lived and worked in Hong Kong, Singapore, Japan, China, and the Philippines; for the past 26 years has held positions in the regional companies of IBM, Unisys, and Deloitte Consulting; and is the owner of his own management consulting firm. He has owned other restaurants in Hong Kong, Singapore, and Thailand. The couple plans to stay in the restaurant business for "a lifetime."
Incidentally, Charles is looking to retire in the next two years, and while hes still busy working in his own firm and doing consulting for a number of Asian firms, Sherill is taking care of the business, something that she is no stranger to.
The couple offers foreign and local dishes in Recovery Rooms menu, like grilled lapu-lapu; sizzling garlic shrimp and mushroom; sizzling scallops; sautéed or fried calamari; fried seafood platter; a number of Filipino specialties, all served with rice, like crispy pata, pata tim, Bicol Express, chicken pigata, beef lengua, crispy ulo, sinigang na baboy, tokwa con lechon, and nilagang baboy; Japanese dishes, like tempura; Italian spaghetti; Western specialties, like Texas chili with rice, and steaks, as expected.
The menu is full of interesting reads, like "Doctors Orders," "Gets the Blood Pressure Going" for their hard drinks, and "Under Medication" for their non-alcoholic drinks. Many entrees are appealing and novel.
The restaurant is open from 8 a.m. to 12 midnight, and offers breakfast, lunch, and dinner, with an all-day snack menu.
The Recovery Room is an upscale dining and entertainment place. It being a theme restaurant, it has already attracted a diverse customer base, including business people, professionals, and families, even the young. After a hard days work, this is the place to head to to rejuvenate and recover, especially the patients and staff of Santos Clinic or other hospitals. And why not? Probably the Recovery Room is where they can be cured of their "illnesses." With a healthy menu and a great atmosphere for fun and socializing, this place might just be the answer to their problems.
Just coming in through the doors is already a treat. The main entrance is a mural of an ambulances rear, complete with siren and lights.
During the day, the restaurant is busy with professionals out for a quick lunch. At night, it converts to a fun place, with the best handpicked live talents performing. Bulakeños, including those from Malolos, need not travel to Manila to enjoy the best in food and entertainment. It is now available just a few steps away along McArthur Highway.
Sherill, who speaks to friends and relatives in her native Kapampangan, is enthusiastic about the business. She said she had to buy the uniforms for the waitresses, which are definitely in sync with the restaurant theme. There will be nurses, all dressed in white, complete with nurses caps and shoes.
Charles, too, has many ideas. The restaurant will have a "Ladies Night" when all female customers get a discount or free drinks, depending on the occasion. There are also plans to offer a van to pick up customers who have no access to private transportation. In addition, there will also be special promotions for golfers, as well as nurses and families. Some drinks, like tequila, will be served in syringes. The walls are decorated with hospital furnishings and paraphernalia. And there will be wheelchairs, too. All these amount to something new that perhaps not only the Bulakeños will enjoy. Word has started to spread about this new dining find, and Manileños are now flocking here.
