Proud Negrense and art patron Angelica Urra Berrie takes a ‘Bao’
Inspired by the spirit and creativity of her hometown, world traveler and renowned New Yorker-Negrense Angelica Urra Berrie returned home to Bacolod. She immediately commissioned the creation of “Bao,” a massive sculpture to grace the Negros Museum.
Creating a tipping point for the resurgence of arts and culture led our very own palangga Angelica to encourage a collaborative art project with artists who trace their roots in Negros. Namedroppables like mosaic artist Lisa de Leon-Zayco and sculptor Paeng Paderna conceived “Bao” as an iconic artwork for the Negros Museum.

Imagining and fulfilling their images of their childhood in Bacolod are sculptures of graceful carabao in the lagoon. “The narrative of survival through economic, political and social turmoil in the sugar industry is a tale of endurance and resilience visualized through delicate mosaics overlaid on a five-ton creature born from our Filipino imagination,” explained Angelica.

Blessed by a cool and breezy sunset, the VIP event opened on the grounds of the Negros Museum with guests gushing over the Met-inspired lighting on the stately pillars of the edifice. Feisty and dedicated cultural and heritage preservation advocate Lyn Gamboa and Governor Alfredo Marañon delivered their welcome remarks after which Angelica shared her foundation’s advocacy for the art scene in Negros.

Celebrating their golden wedding anniversary, Quezon’s power couple Minority Leader Danny Suarez and former Rep. Aleta Suarez exchanged “I do’s” for the second time, dahlings.
The meaningful event took place at the Santuario de San Antonio, Makati in a ceremony officiated by Bishop Emeritus Emilio Marquez and Fr. Leandro Castro, both from Lucena. The wedding was followed with a lavish reception at Shangri-La at The Fort in Bonifacio Global City.

Their five children — Junjun, Joanna, Jenny, Jet and Jayjay — witnessed this milestone in their family, and so did the couple’s eight grandchildren Juliana, Jasmin, Jeffrey, Xavi, Atalia, Amalia, David, Mariana and Isabela.
The fabulous wedding was in stark contrast with the couple’s first wedding held 50 years ago at the Nuestra Señora de Dios Parish Church in Ermita in 1969, a year that proved fruitful for the country and the world for that was the same year when the first man, Neil Armstrong, landed on the moon and Gloria Diaz bagged the first Miss Universe title for the country in Miami, Florida, palanggas.

Performers at the reception were Josh Tiu, Radha, Frenchie Dy and Bituin Escalante. It was the inimitable Dulce, however, who had the singular distinction of singing during the wedding Mass.
Popular fashion designer Paul Cabral made the gowns of the whole entourage, including the bride’s gown.
