That ’90s stride
My first MYOH experience — that’s Make Your Own Havaianas — was more than appropriate. First, I received an invitation in the form of a Koosh Ball. My mom calls it a sipa; my millennial friend calls it a rubbery thingy. The theme was the ’90s, and for once the decade wasn’t about lumberjack shirts and greased up hair. Havaianas took the best of the ‘90s, all the things that have long since become scarce, and put them together in one event.
Think bulky MS-DOS computer, Slinkies, lava lamps and — my favorite of all obsoletes — cassette tapes. Hanging out in a corner, like true ’90s rockers, were Basti Artadi and Cookie Chua, who performed later that night. There was a wall of pin-ups featuring the greats. Leo circa Basketball Diaries, Dennis Rodman in that Milk ad, JTT and Andrew Keagan, Cindy Crawford, Kate Moss and, oddly enough, Peter André were all up there with the obligatory Nirvana poster.
The Havaianas sole of the moment had Tetris-inspired graphics all over it. Pin designs included glow-in-the-dark 8-bit lightning bolts, CRT TVs, pastel cassettes, video game icons and a boom box (I associate this more with the ’80s, but let’s not forget, LL Cool J was also all about it). For the first time, Havaianas also used 3D printers to customize pins with guests’ initials. My pair is green and yellow, to honor my old tsinelas that got run over by our car in 1994. Good times.
