River Island’s holiday trends: Studio 54, Victorian, glam & gothic

The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - River Island sees traditional evening dressing this Christmas reinvented with iconic items from past eras reborn. The result is a dressed-down cosmopolitan approach for the party season. Separates and suiting become the new essential wardrobe staples, layering and texture are key, with lace, velvet and jacquard fabrics featuring heavily throughout.

Inspired by the Edwardian and Victorian periods,  the Vamp trend is dramatic and decadent with a gothic edge. Elements of Christmas glamour are reflected by luxurious fabrications, mini dresses restricted to darker hues using sequins and plunging necklines to offer a sultry feel. Clashing hot pink with scarlet red adds a pops of color to the monochrome palette.

Modern Ethnic, on the other hand,  combines textures and prints to create eclectic low-key sophistication. There are lots of layering with chunky knitwear and heavyweight fur coats making a statement.

Meanwhile, the Tough Girl  trend takes classic shapes and adds modern touches and colors to create a contemporary feel. Micro mini skirts are given an urban spin with stud work, while knitwear takes on metal eyelet details. Layering feminine floral blouses over grungy polo necks and leather skirts steer the collection away from pretty, giving a hint of rebellion.

A retro revival of Studio 54-inspired eveningwear emerges to create Glam Rock while Sauvage trend takes on smart seventies dressing. Hero pieces come in the form of power suits and flares in winter whites.

For men, River Island focuses on high quality fabrics and premium cuts. The color palette is dark and sophisticated complimented with military greens and airforce blues. Juxtaposing sharp party looks with smart casual luxe offers a more redefined look for the festive season.

The Modern Military trend presents a contemporary take on classic utility pieces with colors covering a variety of khaki and melange greys with pops of ecru adding a modern twist. Aztec prints, block luxe sweats and deep contrasting denim turn-ups deliver a sense of modernity, bringing the collection right up to date.

Libertine trend’s minimalist approach to color allows more freedom for experimentation with texture and shape. A hero piece  is the double-zip leather jacket that will become a go-to favorite in any man’s wardrobe.

The Urbaner trend, on the other hand, presents a modern approach to layering  while the ’70s trend is inspired by a period of timeless looks. Block-colour roll necks, PU trimmed knits and pinstripe trousers strike a level of elegance with the hero shearling jacket at the center.

River Island stores are located at Mega Fashion Hall, SM Aura Premier and Glorietta 5.
