Dove

MANILA, Philippines – Initial innovation: In 1957, Dove introduced new chemistry into the lab — a cleansing bar that was 1/4 moisturizing cream, which was very mild compared to soap. The next innovation was to put the bar into a body wash, so Dove liquefied the bar and added glycinate, which produces a rich foam, so cushiony it can cushion a falling egg. Versus competing brands, Dove boasts superior mildness and lipid deposition, with trans-epidermal water loss much less.

The promise: Softer and smoother skin after one shower

New innovation to watch out for: Dove Derm Spa, which features Dove skincare with spa-like pampering, using PPAR proprietary technology with silicone elastomers for a silky-soft feel

Lux

Claim to fame: The leading soap bar in the world, selling four billion bars a year

The promise: The fragrance of a dozen roses in the shower

90 percent of fragrance is usually showered away, making it the most expensive ingredient in the world, how to get it to stick on body.

New innovations to watch out for: Lux’s Classic and Perfumed collections have an embossed fancy lace floral pattern on each bar; Lux shower mousse has the texture of whipped cream. Both feature encapsulated fragrance technology that releases fragrance for 24 hours.

Clear

Claim to fame: Strong in anti-dandruff and scalp care, the Clear Men formula contains oils for healthy scalp and hair.

New innovation to watch out for: Clear Pure Derm, which is silicone-free based on the zero-silicone trend

Tresemme

The initial innovation: Tresemmé was founded in the late ‘40s by hairstylist Edna Emmé, inventor of modern styling, who was the first to bring professional salon products to women.

Products to watch out for: Tresemmé Expert Selection Split Repair shampoo and conditioner, which promises up to 88-percent reduction in split ends; and Keratin Smooth, a beautifying oil that polishes and treats hair after styling.

Vaseline

The initial innovation: Invented in 1870 by Robert Chesebrough, who used petroleum jelly to heal wounds.

The promise: After five days, Vaseline heals skin with micro droplets of Vaseline jelly, and keeps skin healed for three weeks. Boasts 10 times the healing power of competing brands in more formats: body lotion, premium healing serums, and now, a new spray.

CSR: In 2015, Vaseline donated over one million relief kits to typhoon victims in the Philippines. Through the Vaseline Healing Project, 15 million products per year are donated to crisis areas.

New innovation to watch out for: Vaseline now uses PPAR and electromers for a silky after-feel to products like Spray & Go, a moisturizing spray that can be applied quickly after showering and before dressing.

Pond’s

Claim to fame: The biggest skincare brand in Unilever’s portfolio, Pond’s is also the first skincare brand in the world still existing, founded in 1846 by Mr. Pond. Today, the Pond’s Institute has 700 scientists globally.

The initial innovation: “Magic” extract from witch hazel, a legacy that has served six generations of women, plus thyme and pine oil

New innovation to watch out for: Pond’s Acne Clear face wash and treatment, the anti-acne patented technology of which is 2.5 times better than the leading salicylic acid competitor

The promise: Acne will be gone in three days.

Murad

The initial innovation: Dr. Howard Murad’s philosophy of Inclusive Health and eating your water, lessening cultural stress and enhancing emotional well-being

New innovations to watch out for: Murad Transforming Powder, a dual-action cleanser and exfoliator that uses bio-enzymes and dissolving beads to promote smooth, blemish-free skin; and Skin Smoothing Polish, which helps relieve congested pores and deeply exfoliates to leave skin soft and smooth

Dermalogica

Claim to fame: Dermalogica’s interactive Skin Bar face maps clients to analyze their skin and, with the help of a professional therapist, guides them so they know what to use in a home skincare regime.

Initial innovation: Daily Microfoliant, the first powder exfoliant on the market for daily use and still Dermalogica’s No. 1-selling product worldwide

New innovation to watch out for: Overnight Retinol Repair, encapsulated 0.5-percent retinol that comes with a buffer cream so the customer can customize the intensity of the product until she develops tolerance to undiluted retinol

The results: Dermalogica’s most potent product turns back the clock on the signs of aging: wrinkles are reduced, texture is improved, fine lines disappear, skin becomes plump, glowing and hydrated.
