Rocking with an ambassador extraordinary

- Frannie Jacinto - The Philippine Star

The idea for a birthday celebration started when June-born Eva Abesamis wanted to do something worthwhile for her favorite charity, Museo sang Bata sa Negros, a hands-on interactive children’s museum.

The museum fronts 32,000 hectares of the Sagay marine protected area where close to 90 percent of the residents in Negros Occidental depend on the sea for their food and livelihood.

Museo sang Bata sa Negros strives to be an alternative center of learning for children so they can reach their highest potential. It assists in transforming the local communities’ attitude toward the environment by appreciating the sea and its resources so as to ensure a sustainable marine resource for future generations.

To help out a good cause, Music Man RJ Jacinto — who has weekly shows at RJ Bistro — recently opened his bistro to Eva’s friends, adding a fellow Gemini to complete the trio of celebrants in the person of music lover and diplomat, US Ambassador to the Philippines Harry Thomas.

The evening started with Eva’s good-looking son, David Koenigswater, and his Brat Pack band performing for guests, and then segued into RJ’s dynamic rock ‘n’ roll music that kept everyone on their toes till past midnight. Everyone let loose for a good cause that would help Mother Nature and the future of Sagay’s marine world.

Joy Dayrit’s ‘Light’

Joy T. Dayrit’s book of short stories Light was recently launched by The Ateneo Library of Women’s Writings with its editor Edna Z. Manlapaz.

In Edna’s posthumous anthology, she described Joy not only as an accomplished writer but as an accomplished artist, as could be gleaned from the numerous paintings that lined the walls.

Months before the launch, Team TJ (for Tita Joy) was formed, composed of Joy’s five nieces and a nephew, to meticulously go over her myriad of writings, poems, diaries, sketches and photos.  Together with the invaluable and inestimable help of curator and Joy’s dear friend Nilo Ilarde, they eventually came up with a wonderful exhibit of Joy’s multifarious but overall very endearing works. It was a delightful afternoon and a fitting tribute to Joy, loved by so many simply because she lived up to her name.

Cura V

A lifestyle store located at the Rockwell Mall that features an eclectic mix of well-known artists as well as up-and-coming designers, Cura V is the place to go when one wants to find unusual items. Every time I pass by, there is always something of interest that catches my eye and I happily find out that these items are locally made by our outstanding young artists. The latest trunk-show featured some of the brightest names in the jewelry and accessory line: Angela Angeles, Emi Jorge, Nicole Whisenhunt, Michelline Syjuco, Joanique, Janina Dizon, Gabriel Martel, Joyce Makitalo, and Erica Concepcion.
