Mascara for the most natural, long and lush lashes

STYLE S.O.S. - The Philippine Star

Dear Rissa,

I’m looking for a mascara that gives long, thick lashes but still looks very, very natural. You see, I work as a dentist and my face is often up close to the patient’s. Other mascaras I’ve tried give thick but clumpy and fake-looking lashes. They can look quite scary up close. I want a mascara that makes my lashes look better without looking like I’m actually wearing mascara. Please also recommend the finest eyeliner you’ve tried. Thank you!

Jemimah

Please try Bobbi Brown Intensifying Long-Wear Mascara (available at Rustan’s Makati). I was able to road test this around two months ago before it was released in the market. I’m actually a fan of their other mascara (Perfectly Defined Mascara, which I always keep in my makeup kit) and this latest Bobbi Brown mascara is by far their best ever. The formula goes on smoothly and evenly — absolutely no clumping every single time I’ve used it. The brush is perfect for getting in the corners and allows you to get every single lash, even the bottom ones. Unlike other mascaras that weigh the lashes down, this magic wand keeps your lashes curled. Even months later, the formula in the tube does not thicken and clump into a mess. This mascara still goes on seamlessly, giving me the most natural long and lush-looking lashes. Even intimate and up close, my husband could not tell I was wearing mascara! It didn’t disappoint during the hottest summer months of Manila and can actually last up to 16 hours. I have sensitive eyes and I love that I can remove this mascara without irritating cleansing oils and makeup removers. It comes off effortlessly in the shower.

As for the finest eyeliner I’ve tried, do check out Maybelline Hyper Sharp Liner (P399, available at leading department stores, supermarkets and personal care stores). Amazingly, it boasts a 0.05-mm tip! It allows you to create über-thin lines and fills in the tiny gaps between each lash, giving you defined eyes and the illusion of thicker lashes — without anyone knowing! This liquid liner is also wonderfully smudge-proof (resists water, sweat, sebum and tears) and is also easily removed with warm water.

Primer time: After toner, go for a primer like Make Up For Ever’s mattifying All Mat.

Foundation For Acidic Skin

Dear Regina,

I want to get your advice about finding the right liquid foundation. I have tried numerous brands, but by afternoon, my makeup is almost non-existent and has oxidized already. I also bought primers, but nothing works. I can still see my pores by the end of my shift at work. I just want to have a smooth, even, natural-looking finish. Can you suggest any brands that are worth trying out?

RJ

Maybe it’s not about the brands, but the formula. If you have combination to oily skin, you might benefit from oil-free foundation formulas and mattifying primers (or if you’re determined to cover up your pores, a pore-refining primer), and if your skin is acidic and tends to oxidize your makeup, consider going for a base that’s a shade lighter.

I have combination skin as well (oily around the T zone but normal everywhere else), and I’ve noticed that my makeup looks best when my skin is well-prepared. Make sure you’re working with a clean canvas. Spritz a toner (I like Kiehl’s Acai Damage-Protecting Toning Mist) onto a cotton pad and nix any existing oils, then go for a primer (Make Up For Ever has a mattifying one called All Mat, but I also like using water-based ones like Laura Mercier’s).

Wear as little foundation as you can manage so that it doesn’t end up caking at the end of the day. Shu Uemura’s gives great coverage and lasts forever! And, it comes in a wide range of shades. Then, dab concealer on any spots that may require it. Allow everything to settle before setting your makeup with a light dusting of powder. Setting your makeup is the key to making it last, but be careful not to put on too much powder or you risk looking (gasp!) cakey.      REGINA

Recipe For The Master Cleanse

Dear Lucy,

Please share with me the recipe of the Master Cleanse. What is the ratio of lemon juice to maple syrup and water? I saw your Kris TV guesting and my cousin said it will make me lose weight in a healthy way. Please share! I know you have tried it several times!

Eloise

Yes, I have tried the Master Cleanse (MC) and I have, in fact, done it more than once, but I will not be too quick to just pass on on the recipe of the lemonade drink. It is, in my experience, a very simple way to not only lose weight but also detoxify (it is an almost age-old belief the latter is essentially vital to staying and being healthy), but I feel that you will be able to appreciate it more if you would please read the book. There is an expanded third edition by Peter Glickman; it stays faithful to The Master Cleanser as first published by Stanley Burroughs in 1976, but it also features a compilation of the most-asked questions re the MC over the years. It is very interesting as it is informative and if you read through it, you will also have better chances of staying on the program and completing it till the 10th day, at the very least (should you decide to go on it). More than a means to lose weight, reading the book will afford you the chance to make a very informed choice. And whether you take it on or not, the health facts/tips you would have gathered in the course of reading the book will make you better at choosing the way you feed your body.
