Maureen Disini has that fashion eye

The recent “Fashion I” show, which featured the holiday collection of the country’s newest designer Maureen Disini at Resorts World, was a showstopper.

Invited to join the show of talented veterans OJ Hofer, Jun Escario and Philip Rodriguez, Maureen held her own with dresses that had the most fluid, graceful lines.  It’s no wonder that this European-educated artist has the fashionable set of all age groups snapping up her collection as fast as she can make them in her atelier.

During its heyday in the 1960s, the Manila Hilton Hotel was the tallest skyscraper with 22 storys and the first five-star hotel in the country put up by brothers Antonio and Francisco Delgado.  It was the “in” place in town to see and be seen as well as to make deals.  VIPs from all over the world always chose to stay at the Hilton and that included Muhammad Ali for his Thrilla in Manila fight; Gregory Peck, Michael Jackson and the Jackson 5, Tina Turner, Johnny Cash, Michael Caine, our very own Gen. Carlos Romulo and National Artist Federico Alcuaz.

Everyone just had to attend the daily lunch shows produced by the hostess with the mostest Conchita Sunico.   She handpicked her models from among her friends’ daughters and nieces and no one could apply if she didn’t know them personally.   

Many decades later, the cache of the Hilton is no more, but the memories still fill the hearts and minds of those who have worked, at the hotel, visited it, and enjoyed its many wonderful experiences.

The book launch of Heartbeat Manila Hilton turned into a wonderful reunion for those sharing a treasure trove of personal stories.
