Marc Jacobs' ode to the '70s
The ’70s were responsible for hippies, Gloria Steinem and the second wave of feminism. Tom Wolfe dubbed it the “Me Decade.”
More recently, the decade has been associated with those Miu Miu bellbottoms from last year, Celine’s seminal spring/summer collection and much of what I saw at the Marc Jacobs show at the debut of the brand’s new store in Greenbelt.
The show, an ode to the disco era, was peppered with wide-brimmed flounced hats, triangle hair and a silhouette indelibly linked to the recently preggers stylist and Jacobs fan Rachel Zoe, who gave birth to a baby boy she christened Skylar. Wide-leg pants and a tie-front blouse topped with a jacket; caftan and oversized shades; maxi dress, platforms and an oversized cocktail ring are some of the ’70s looks that have become staples of the celebrity stylist’s wardrobe.
It’s easy to imagine the celebrity stylist — as she is being wheeled on a gurney to the operating room for childbirth — gushing to the designer on her BlackBerry how bananas the show was.
Jacobs channeled the disco era after partying with scandal-plagued supermodel Naomi Campbell. “I was at (her) birthday party in Cannes,” Jacobs tells Style.com, “and all the girls wore these long dresses, and after dancing all night they hitched them up to the waist.”
He went on to name-check the New York Dolls and Yves Saint Laurent. for his inspiration. The film Taxi Driver appeared to play a large part on his mood board.
Color was a major plot for Jacobs’ summer story with electric orange, mustard, violet, fuchsia and crimson dominating a scene of belled sleeves, satin frocks, printed jackets, halter dresses, strapless jumpsuits, accessorized with obi belts, straw hats and orchid-embellished necklaces and hairpieces.
Deliberately sprinkling the collection with nods to the era that birthed Studio 54, one particular standout was the “flatform.”
Made popular by this season’s eye-grabbing Prada striped footwear and color-blocked Fendi sandals, the flatform is a high platform without the backbreaking steep arches.
My mother, upon seeing some of the photos I took of models in flatforms post-show, sniffed, “I wore a lot of those when I was younger.”
Score to Jacobs for some serious ’70s authenticity.
The store, which took over the outlet space of SSI across Prada in Greenbelt 4, will showcase the label’s signature and favorite handbags like the iconic lamb leather double-stitched quilted bags with gold finishing hardware as well as the Paradise, Wellington, Baroque, Quilting collections in colors ranging from monotone warm hues to bright pink, blue and orange.
