Classic chic

PERSONAL CHOICE - Frannie Jacinto -

After having been invited to two recent formal events that precisely stated “formal wear,” I realized that many of our local ladies have the savvy to not only look well-dressed but also the savoir faire to stand out.  Surprisingly, many wore classic clothes that have withstood the test of time.

Mellie and Louie Ablaza’s “God and Goddess” ball enabled mere mortals to play dress-up and be as fantastic or outrageous as possible. Junjun Ablaza’s outstanding creativity could be viewed from all angles of the NBC tent and the gigantic heavenly horse floating from the ceiling made one want to enter the heavens astride the winged creature.

On a historical note, the University of Sto. Tomas is known as Asia’s oldest learning institution and precedes Harvard in age, as it was founded in 1611by Dominican priests, versus the founding of the American institution in 1636.  This shows how long education in the Philippines has been given importance by our Spanish colonizers, who came to our shores in 1521.

To celebrate its 400th year of existence, talents from the UST Conservatory of Music headed by Dean Raul Sunico, Fr. Isidro Abano and Maricris Zobel, held its annual Christmas concert that featured the best the university can offer. They made us all proud of the wonderful legacy and heritage that makes the Philippines such a diverse, beautiful country.  It was a wonderful way to start the holiday month of December.
