Tippi Ocampo: Design as a Force for Good

For Stephanie Ocampo, more famously known as Tippi Ocampo, a multi-awarded fashion designer and author of Not by the Book: Fashioning Design, creating clothes is not just a job, it is the means by which she can share her appreciation of Philippine culture with the younger generation. More importantly, designing allows her to help ICanServe, a group that seeks to assist breast cancer sufferers and survivors.

Ocampo, whose mother-in-law passed away after a bout with cancer, witnessed the transformative power of design when she made clothes for ICanServe to raise awareness about breast cancer, as well as for cancer patients to use.

“The opportunity made me realize the subtle power that design has in uplifting people’s spirits,” says Ocampo. “People often think of design as an add-on, or as a status symbol. But true design helps people see ordinary things in a new way, and it helps foster national identity and pride.”

Ocampo also supports Organ Donor Card, which encourages organ and tissue donation, and volunteers for Angel Brigade, a group that sends humanitarian aid to victims of natural disasters.

“I also love the advocacy of We Are What We Do, which is a movement that inspires people to use small, everyday actions to affect social change.”

Ocampo concludes, “My interest in design is broader than fashion because I believe we have a hand in co-designing our lives through the choices we make every day.”

Stephanie Zubiri: Speaking Up on Climate Change and Proper Nutrition

Chef and model Stephanie Zubiri studied history and geography at the Sorbonne in Paris and interned at the United Nation’s environment program.

Her training, along with a lifelong love of the outdoors, led her to promote awareness about global warming.

“Our leaders need to realize that climate change issues are not just environmental but can truly affect the country’s economic productivity, social development, health, making living conditions for the less fortunate even worse,” says Zubiri, who is part of the Dakila Artists’ climate-change awareness campaign and an Artist Advocate for Oxfam.

Aside from climate change, another cause that Zubiri supports is proper nutrition among Filipinos. This advocacy was triggered during a medical mission organized by the office of her brother, Senator Juan Miguel Zubiri.

“I realized the most common demands (in the mission) were: vitamins, heart medication, diabetes medication and high blood pressure. All these things can be avoided by proper nutrition and cooking your food properly.”

Zubiri hopes to someday launch a project aimed at educating poor Filipino families on how proper nutrition can be achieved without having to spend more on food.

Stephanie Kienle: Little Things Make Life Interesting

For Stephanie Kienle, marketing manager for a furniture manufacturer and one of Manila’s prettiest faces, fulfillment stems from the enjoyment of little things: the taste of a home-cooked meal, the comforts of home or spending quality time with family.

“I think that it is very important to appreciate the small things that make the big picture,” Kienle says.

Manila-born Kienle’s passion for little things extends to the city’s street children. Kienle is a proud member of Virlanie Foundation, a group that helps street urchins become responsible independent young adults. “Having been born and raised in Manila, I am increasingly aware of all the poverty that surrounds us.”

With the help of supporters, Virlanie provides food, shelter and clothing to street children. The group also gives the children a chance to get an education and reunite with their families.

The performance of the Virlanie Choir of street children during a fundraising on the foundation’s 18th-year anniversary was a particularly moving event for Kienle.

“The smiles on their faces were proof that they were in a happy place, and I hope that every child is given that opportunity. It made me proud of the cause I was supporting,” she says.
