STI Center of Arts and Tan-Gan present fashion workshops

-

MANILA, Philippines - The STI Center of Arts and Lulu Tan-Gan present “Fashion Workshops” on April 26 at the STI Center of Arts, University Parkway Drive corner 32nd st., Bonifacio Global City, Taguig.

The workshops are designed by a group of respected industry experts to make Manila the next fashion hub of Asia.

The goal of “Fashion Workshops” is simple: to share knowledge and to make it one step easier for the next Filipino designer. The long-term goal is to be able to offer degree courses in fashion and the related arts.

STI launched the first phase of its arts program when it opened the Center of Arts facility at Bonifacio Global City. It offers culinary arts, theater, and photography.

For the “Fashion Workshops” series, STI and Lulu Tan-Gan have put together a talented faculty composed of industry experts who are active practitioners in their chosen fields. They are: the Prince of Fashion Inno Sotto, Queen of Knits Lulu Tan-Gan, self-taught accessories designer Dennis Celestial, bridal gown expert Patrice Ramos-Diaz, La Salle and Slim’s Fashion and Arts School alumnus Joey Samson, freelance stylist Noel Manapat, R.T. Paras Haute Couture’s Roy Gonzales, hat designer Pidge Reyes, Concours International des Jeunes Createurs de Mode grand prize winner Jojie Lloren, style icon and modeling instructor Rissa Mananquil, and fashion illustrator Robi Lolin.

The actual application of theory through practice is the core philosophy of STI Center of Arts & Tan-Gan “Fashion Workshops.”

Lectures are supported with exercises, which are carried out in laboratory classes or in close relationship with the business.

Students not only learn to design projects at a theoretical level but more importantly, to put into practice this technical know-how.

  Courses offered are as follows:

• Introductory to Fashion Design by Inno Sotto. It covers capsule references to the history of costume, fashion theories, components of fashion, the intangibles of fashion, the design process, and the fashion systems.

 • Experimental Fashion by Patrice Ramos-Diaz. It offers experienced designers an opportunity to expand their approach in developing fashion design concepts using different research pathways, creative processes, and experimentation. A basic knowledge of design principles and technical skills in fashion design is required.

• Modern Menswear Design by Joey Samson. This workshop offers an introduction to the design of menswear. Learn about general classifications, designing for special occasions, building a wardrobe, and designing a collection.

 • Creative Exercise in Sewing by Pidge Reyes. This workshop aims to familiarize the student with the various tools and machines used in the garment business. Creative exercises will prepare the student for advanced sewing courses in garment construction.

  • Basic Flat Pattern Drafting by Jojie Lloren. Students will learn to draft basic slopers/patterns, the building blocks of a style pattern, in order to learn the tools, terms, and methods used for flat pattern drafting.

 • Draping 1 by Jojie Lloren. This workshop introduces the student to another method of pattern making by draping. The student will work with fabric instead of paper to create a basic pattern set consisting of the front and back bodice slopers; front and back skirt slopers and the basic sleeve.

 • Draping 2 by Roy Gonzales. Draping is an intuitive and enjoyable way to create fashion ideas. By twisting, pleating, folding, gathering and/or layering fabric on a dummy, you can get the most unexpected results. Working with basic blocks, you will learn how to draft patterns according to specific measurements. Emphasis on achieving a good fit will be taught through the stages of constructing a garment from muslin to finished product.

• Introduction to Knitwear by Lulu Tan-Gan. This course offers students the chance to understand knitwear construction and to create a project in knitwear design used in knit-loom. Start by creating your own fabrics through the process of research and sourcing for inspirational yarns and materials. Subsequently, you will learn how to knit swatches while gaining hands-on experience in pattern calculation and assembly.

• Fashion Illustration by Robi Lolin. This workshop is designed to teach the student how to create a fashion sketch as artistic rendering. When rendering a sketch, the freehand movement is guided by proper visualization of how a fabric falls, showing the design details and how mood is created within the sketch.

 • Fashion Styling by Noel Manapat. Styling is an essential factor in making or breaking an image. Students will learn techniques of fashion styling through styling assignments. Great stylists can become fashion editors or fashion consultants to big brands.

  • Creative Accessories Design by Dennis Celestial. This workshop will guide students to create accessories using conventional material and techniques combined with uncongenial design.

 • Creative Exercises in Hat Making by Pidge Reyes. This workshop will teach students how to draft, sew, and embellish three basic hat shapes: sectioned cap, pillbox, and the soft-brimmed hat. This simplified, step-by-step process is designed to give students a solid foundation for hat making.

   • Modeling 1 by Rissa Mananquil. This workshop teaches participants how to break into the world of modeling. Learn the basic modeling techniques used by today’s top fashion models and understand what it takes to be a future supermodel.

 • Modeling 2 by Rissa Mananquil. Equip yourself with runway rules and techniques, understand how to build a model’s set card and portfolio, and find out what’s in a professional model’s bag. Discover the do’s and don’ts for a go-see and what to do when you get booked — all these plus other first-hand insider tips and tricks.
