Points to consider when getting an eyebrow tattoo

STYLE S.O.S. - Lucy Torres-Gomez, Rissa M. Samson, Tingting Cojuangco -

Dear Rissa,

My friends and I are planning to have our eyebrows tattooed. Can you recommend a reputable place to have that done because we have heard of some tattooed eyebrows turning a different color (like reddish or greenish) after sometime?

Mel

I’ve always felt that grooming the eyebrows is as important as combing your hair. After all, eyebrows frame your eyes and create an expression for the entire face. But before you consider tattooing them, having greenish eyebrows should be the least of your concerns. There are more important things to consider.

Before you have your eyebrows tattooed, you need to have an initial consultation with the professional applying the procedure. Make sure you seek a specialist. You may need to take antibiotics beforehand to prevent a bacterial infection. You may also be asked to eliminate the use of alcohol, aspirin, and nicotine before the procedure to lessen the chance of swelling or bleeding. There is also the risk of an allergic reaction to the pigments.

And if you think tattooing your brows will forever spare you the trouble of “drawing your eyebrows” every morning, they can still fade over time. Beauty products that contain alpha hydroxy acid can partially remove or dissolve the tattoo. Light of all kinds, but especially sunlight, can play a role in lightening the color of your tattooed eyebrows. Lastly, remember that if the results of the tattoo aren’t good, it can be quite difficult to correct them.

When it comes to the eyebrows, the most reputable place is Browhaus (located at the 2nd floor of Serendra, Taguig, telephone number 856-9140 and 4th floor, Greenbelt 5, Makati, telephone number 501-3998).  With its origins in Singapore and well known as “The Brow Architects,” Browhaus entirely specializes in brow and lash grooming services. I myself am very anal when it comes to my eyebrows so it was awesome news to hear that Browhaus is finally in Manila. For all the ladies (and men) who want their brows plucked, tweezed, threaded, and waxed to perfection by highly trained experts, Browhaus is the place to go.

Since you and your friends are planning to have your eyebrows tattooed, inquire about their Brow Resurrection. This service is not your ordinary tattoo where brows tend to look unnatural and fade into horrifying colors over time. For the Brow Resurrection, Browhaus uses an advanced technique where brows are constructed strand by strand to give a true lifelike design. Natural eyebrows do not have a uniformed thickness of hair throughout. Browhaus recreates the most natural arches with a thicker root tapering to a finer end. Their special flow technique creates brow strands in the same flow as natural arches. I went through their portfolio of eyebrows that underwent the Brow Resurrection — the before and after photos were astounding! I kept blinking my eyes in amazement and would even inspect the photos up close to get a better look at every strand. Browhaus’ Brow Resurrection is the most natural eyebrow tattoo I have ever seen. It gives impressive 3D results where strokes are more detailed to give you a truly lifelike strand design. Browhaus makes use of 100-percent organic dye developed in France and widely implemented in Japan. They also use special handcrafted tools and offer a variety of needle points you can choose from to get the most natural brows. The Brow Resurrection comes with a free touch-up within the first three months.

Scared of growing old? Read between the lines

Dear Lucy,

I’m so scared of growing old. I am in my late 30s, and the thought of wrinkles and sagging body parts freaks me out. I work out every day and I feel that all will just go to waste when age catches up with me. I travel a lot, but I suffer for fashion because I absolutely wear stilettos only. My back hurts now. Do you know of a brand of stilettos that’s as comfortable as flats so I can be fashionable in transit?

Michelle

Please do not stress over aging. It is part of the flow of life. Control your mind and learn to celebrate life in all its layers and levels. You can be beautiful at any age. You say you work out religiously so I’m sure that will pay off somehow. It is useless to worry about aging, wrinkles, the body defying gravity. Think of how frightening you will look if you had a wrinkle-free face and body, but you are already 92 years old. That would frighten me, any child, your dearest friends. Seriously. Invest instead on your health. There is a sexiness that comes with age, embrace that. Have fun with fashion and step outside that little box you have created for yourself.

Please try flats. There are wonderful brands and styles that will not compromise your fashion sense. You do not have to suffer for fashion, most especially while you are in transit, away from the comforts of home. Get nice-fitting pants in slim and trouser cuts. You can wear them with flats. Invest in cashmere cardigans and wraps, and movie star (read: huge) shades.

By the way, the brands for flats that I think are most comfortable include Tod’s, Delman, and Tory Burch.

I hope I have helped you, Michelle.

Wanted: Dream Eye Cream

Dear Ms. Tingting,

It’s back-to-school time again. I’m a junior nursing student this semester at the Makati Medical Center. Since high school, I’ve always been serious with my studies that I really stay so late at night to do homework and research. When I started college, I became even more devoted to studying. But as I am growing older, too, I’ve become more conscious about my appearance. Late nights have left me with dark circles around my tired-looking eyes. Is there anything I can do or any makeup I can use to conceal these dark circles, if not totally get rid of them? I’m starting to entertain a manliligaw at this point that’s why I am bothered all of a sudden. Help!

She-Ann

Hooray for a student as studious as you are! You owe it to yourself, too, to take care of how you look especially because of sleepless nights. And because of your exposure to patients, you have to look pleasant.

If late nights leave you with dark circles, cool cucumber cut thinly and placed on your eyes for 15 minutes daily will help. Trying to hide dark eye circles? Use a concealer makeup the color of your skin. Not too thick, just a thin layer spread under the eyes.

If you can afford an eye cream, use Lancome High Resolution Eye. La Praire Skin Caviar (available at Rustan’s) may cost much, but it does wonders. Revlon and Max Factor have eye cream makeup that’s affordable.
