Chanel reinterprets the gypsy look

-

MANILA, Philippines - While delving through the house archives, Peter Philips, global creative makeup director for Chanel, rediscovered gypsy dresses by Gabrielle Chanel — a 1939 couture collection in which long pleated taffeta skirts were paired with fitted blouses and colorful scarves.

“The gypsy is a heroine with very distinctive beauty codes,” explains Peter Philips. “After looking through the sketches by Mademoiselle Chanel, I also wanted to play with all of these contrasts. The gypsy’s eyes are as dark as her lips are fiery. She has the passion of travel in her veins, that of celebration, dance, and especially that of darkness and mystery.”

Peter Philips reinterprets the gypsy look through a range of lipstick reds darkened with a micro-dose of black pigments which he calls “dusty reds.”

From shadow to light, from festive energy to absolute danger, from bursts of laughter to dance, Peter Philips plays with every contrast. As the hours pass, the vagabond beauty of the gypsy eye happily dresses up in champagne prism and dense plums before slipping into the darkness of the night.

Les 4 Ombres — Mystic Eyes is a summary of gypsy contrasts compounded in four shades for the eyes: a deep, ultra dense and almost black brown for absolute seduction; a transparent nude pink; a silver pigment to light up the corner of the eye, the base of the lashes or transform your favorite eyeshadow for seductive subtlety; a soft silky brown.
