How to get a 24K pout
Good morning,” enthusiastically chirps Bob Briddon, Avon Philippines’ president and general manager, to his audience, composed mostly of the local media, who, at that moment, were just finishing up with their lunch. “ In Avon, we always say ‘good morning’,” he explains, revealing that his greeting was no random tongue slip. The salutation, he goes on to say, connotes freshness and a certain vitality, and with this explanation alone, you see how Briddon begins to warm up his audience to the whole purpose of this Avon breakthrough event, the beauty brand’s first major event of the year.
It will be realized later on that Briddon is not just welcoming committee but also pseudo-curator as Avon revealed its“Laboratory of Beauty Discoveries,” a tour of sorts to introduce three of new beauty products set to come out within the first half of the year. Three rooms in the Manila Peninsula were converted into “laboratories”, each one introducing a new breakthrough product.
With Angel Aquino as host and “tour guide,” the tour kicked off with a no-frills presentation by Dmitri Ptchelintsev, strategic alliances and new technology senior manager from Avon’s R and D facility in New York. Ptchelintsev revealed the latest product of Anew, the brand’s best-selling anti-aging skincare line, the Anew Clinical Retexturizing Peel. Though not exactly a peel, but a stack of damp circular pads, this product promises more than it looks. Created for the woman whose schedule can’t afford lengthy appointments at the derma clinic, this new product is supposed to give the same benefits of a glycolic peel, only minus the skin irritation. In fact, Avon attests that their DIY peel is even superior to the 35-percent glycolic acid chemical peel that you get at your dermatologist.
Infused with glycolic acid, a natural skin exfoliant and moisturizer, and soothing botanicals, this treatment peels away dullness and surface aging, leaving radiant and natural-looking skin — and this just after the first use. In four weeks, lines significantly diminish, and, as 100 percent of women tested attest, their skin showed improvements in texture, clarity, clogged pores, and sun damage.
The next “laboratory” was a bit more interactive. Avon’s complete line of makeup products was set in “color bars” designed to encourage the guests to “play with the colors of Avon.” The star of the lab, however, was the new Ultra Moisture Rich 24K Gold lipsticks. Set to be out on the market in May, these color tubes are enhanced with pure 24K gold (no kidding) and long-lasting moisture which allows them to easily glide across the lips, leaving a lustrous sparkle and shimmery flecks on your pouters.
The luster this 24K Gold lipstick leaves glides along the line of this summer’s metallic look. Makeup expert and Avon favorite Lala Flores says, that the look this summer “will be all about the indulgence and shimmer of gold. It’s all about radiant beauty.” And she showed just how summer is destined to shine by demonstrating the look on Avon celebrity endorser and showbiz star, Angel Locsin, whose appearance alone proves just how huge a pull the brand has.
Last stop revealed a room set up to look like a real laboratory, complete with liquid-filled flasks and bunsen burners and the requisite lab scientists, decked head-to-toe in lab gear: the goggles, white coats and Einstein hairdo. With the help of these two scientists, Barbs Aguirre, Southeast Asia cluster category head for fragrance, mixed three different essences that were later on revealed to be the top, middle, and bottom notes of Avon’s newest fragrances for him and her called Just Play.
Just Play For Him and For Her capture the fun-loving spirit of the young. It’s really the essence of fun,” explained Aguirre. And, just when things couldn’t get any strangely wackier, the two scientists shrug off lab gear and reveal themselves as Luis Manzano and Nikki Gil, two of local showbiz’s hottest young stars.
