Live and let dive

PENNY LANE - Rebecca C. Rodriguez -

If you are a creature of the deep that digs going hundreds of meters below the surface, then you are one helluva brave soul. As greater depths are reached, you get to experience the beauty and wonder of the ocean come alive, and Jaeger-LeCoulture’s collection of dive watches lets you experience it all, up close and personal.

Since the ’60s, Jaeger-LeCoultre has a longstanding tradition for dive watches. Thanks to the Memovox Deep Sea, model E857, this watch became a milestone accomplishment for the brand as the first diver’s watch equipped with an alarm function to remind divers to return to the surface.

“Although there are a lot of dive watches in the market, we were the first to invent the mechanical depth measurement device (depth sensor chamber),” says Daniel Rogger, Jaeger-LeCoultre managing director for Asia Pacific. “No other watch brand had thought of this before because it measures how deep you dive from zero to 80 meters.”

Since diving is all about timing and divers obviously cannot look at a wall clock, they need a waterproof watch to begin with. Plus, the dive watch should have a rotating bezel to calculate how long they are in the water. Another feature should be big, luminous numbers that are easy to read.

Just last year, the brand launched its latest collection of dive watches. And so with each model of Jaeger-LeCoultre’s Master Compressor Diving collection, you can venture further without getting to the surface, let alone on time, all while daring you to go as deep as 1,000 meters. Expect a great mix of style and technical performance.

Rogger explains, “Master Compressor Diving encapsulates high standards, dynamic attitude, determination and winning spirit of a team of watch making professionals, combined with a concern for details, aesthetic elegance and authenticity.”

So, you’ll certainly want a watch from Jaeger-LeCoultre’s Master Compressor Diving (MCD) series. Each design has unique functions geared for men and women. Besides, they’re the perfect accessory to build up your diving image even if you’re not a diver.

GMT

Perhaps the best-selling timepiece from this collection is the Master Compressor Diving GMT. This limited-edition watch of 1,500 (satin-brushed grade five titanium) was sold out instantly worldwide. MCD GMT is water-resistant up to 100 meters, measures 44 mm in diameter with a second time zone. Plus, it has a cool luminescent movement as well.

PRO GEOGRAPHIC

There is also the MCD Pro Geographic, which is the flagship watch of the brand. It has a 46.3-mm diameter with the depth gauge and houses a geographic sports movement. Because there are only 50 pieces, Rogger enthuses, “If you own one of these watches, you really have something to talk about.”

CHRONOGRAPH

The last model for men is the MCD Chronograph. Equipped with a pulsometer to determine measure the number of heartbeats per minute, this watch is perfect for free-diving and for those who want to optimize training by taking into account the maximum pulse rates. Other cool features include water resistance up to 1,000 meters and a 65-hour power reserve.

GMT LADY

Adventurous femmes will adore the Master Compressor Diving ladies watches. Just like the GMT Lady, it features a second time zone for a woman’s jet-setting needs and a 48-hour power reserve, too. Choose from the three wristbands: white alligator leather strap, steel bracelet or white rubber-molded bracelet.

CHRONOGRAPH LADY

Chronograph Lady is so glam because the bezel is set with diamonds and features characteristic touches of color for the first 15 minutes of dive time. It also includes a 65-hour power reserve and a two-tone wind rose, which is the signature feature of the Master Compressor Diving line.

For the worldwide launch of Jager-LeCoultre’s Master Compressor Diving line in Hawaii, the brand asked an Australian company to build a diving robot to bring the watch down to 1,000 meters showing a paper cup beside the watch shrinking because of the pressure. Spectacular show, indeed.

Celebrities seem to be fond of Jaeger-LeCoultre watches. Just like Leonardo DiCaprio who was seen at the premiere of Blood Diamond sporting the Master Minute Repeater. Valued at $175,000, this limited-edition of 200 features a 15-day power reserve movement that chimes the hours, quarter hours and minutes.

On the female side, Jaeger-LeCoultre was really proud to announce that German actress Diane Kruger of Troy and National Treasure: Book of Secrets is the brand’s ambassador and will wear the watches in her daily life and on the red carpet.

Rogger concludes, “I believe that consumers like dive watches for their attributes. Men love our watches because they are like toys for the big boys. Women on the other hand think of it as an elegant piece of jewelry and companion in discovering far-flung horizons and ocean depths.”

With time on your side, this is something worth diving for.
