Shopsifted: Goddess tops

- Ana G. Kalaw -
Now on exhibit at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute is "Goddess," a display of provocative, ultra-feminine pieces inspired by Mt. Olympus’ royalties – elegantly romantic like Venus or bold and revealing like Diana. This classic style of bare shoulders and draped folds have persisted for over two-and-a-half millenia, emerging as an ideal form which has undergone innumerous modern transformations, from Madame Gres’ creations during the 1940s to J.Lo’s pink Chanel stunner in the 2001 Oscars to Tom Ford’s recent Athenian offerings. "Goddess" evokes images of Michaelangelo’s marble sculptures, Sophia Loren’s Hollywood heyday, and Versace’s supermodel glamazons.

In the local style scene, donning a goddess-style tops is the perfect way to show off some skin without having to alter your diet. Slits, drapings, and low-neck silhouettes that enhance the clavicle are instant figure slimmers. They’re also the best way to assert fashion’s unshakable influence despite the come-too-soon stormy weather.
