Intimately Black
April 4, 2002 | 12:00am
That super active club, the popular Club Bulakeño, Inc. (CBI), dahlings, presented to Cosmo Manilles sociedad the first "Black Theater" in the country to raise funds for the Malolos Elementary School (MES).
The tres elegant gala dinner show entitled Intimately Black was held at the classy Mandarin Hotel Ballroom. It raised funds for the completion of the renovation of the MES library and the reconstruction of two new classrooms for special children in Bulacan.
This was the CBIs first charity project for this year, palanggas. Last year, the club renovated both the exterior and the interior of the MES library and donated books as well. However, the funds raised were not enough to beautify the grounds around the library and classrooms.
According to engineer and CBI founder Gene Reyes, Black Theater was a special project of former CBI president Nedy Tantoco in order to finish the project.
When asked what the chosen 96 invitees wore to the Black Theater, Nedy T. was tight-lipped. She said, "I want to keep guests in the dark, so to speak, so as not to preempt the drama and magic of this musical dinner show. I want it to be a total surprise for the guests. But I guarantee, it will mesmerize you. All guests will be required to wear all black. Since one good deed deserves another, this is our way of thanking our donors by giving them a unique and pleasurable experience."
The gala musical dinner staged by Mandarin Oriental, dahlings, featured loads of Broadway love songs. Unlike the typical dinner and show format, Musical Dreams provided a unique theatrical and dramatic dining experience from the moment we were ushered into the ballroom until we heard the last musical note.
As the theme connoted, palanggas, the room was completely dark except for dining lamps that lit each table softly, just enough for us to see what our dinner was. We were entertained by fabulous actors and actresses, all of them from the hotel.
A super six-course gala dinner prepared by the hotels creative award-winning chefs was served. Each course evoked the theme of the Broadway song being presented.
The ballroom was pitch-black, illuminated only by hanging lamps, and tea candles lined on the floor. The tables and chairs were all covered in black. All these provided a dramatic background for theatrical and elegant tabletop designs which had varied centerpieces.
All the waiters were also dressed in black and wore white gloves, thus becoming "invisible," with only their hands seen with the help of black lights.
Dinner consisted of Essence of ox tail soup with braised ox tail agnolotti; cantaloupe melon sorbet in watermelon soup; grilled shiitake and mango chutney stuffed breast of free orange chicken, baked in puff pastry set on morel mushroom veloute and glazed spring vegetables; warm goat cheese and tomato gratin with arugula pesto and rosemary oil drizele; caramelized key lime pie with Valrhona chocolate mousse; and satsumo orange compote.
Altogether, palanggas, there were 12 superbly presented musical numbers, including that eye-popping opening number and naturellement, the grand finale. During the performances, the spotlights shone on the performers only from their waist up, which created a dream-like effect. Other numbers were held at elevated platforms which looked liked ultra wide TV screens positioned around the room. The performers lip-synched the songs being played.
It was an altogether a fantastic night, palanggas.
Manilles 40-karat, hip junior set is still talking about the grand debutante ball of Michelle Robles held at the cool NBC a full moon ago, dahlings.
Sta. Lucia Realty and Development mega heavyweight Exequiel "Excy" Robles and Royal Homes czarina, Matilde "Diding" de la Paz-Robles went all out to give their daughter a debut to remember. Decorator Jun Hen of Flower Facade created a profusion of blooms, adding a splash of vivid Versace colors like fuchsia, citrus, yellow, tangerine and turquoise to replicate a neo-Victorian setting. A full-sized winding staircase was built especially for Michelles dramatic entrance during which she wore a gown by top-notch designer Larry Espinosa. Larry E. was one of five designers commissioned to create Michelles gowns. The others were equally hot, hot names in the fashion world: Inno Sotto, Joe Salazar, Patrice Diaz and Oskar Peralta.
Penk Ching created the towering Versace-inspired fondant cake. The excellently prepared menu was whipped up by the hard-to-beat Le Souffle under the supervision of the King of Chefs Billy King, palanggas.
Frannie Zamoras FGZ Creative Group spent weeks planning the event and filming the high-tech video that showed Michelle doing impressions of Gwyneth Paltrow in Shakespeare in Love, Angelina Jolie in Tomb Raider and break-out it girl Reese Witherspoon in Legally Blonde.
Proud father and businessman Excy, known to shun the limelight, gamely went out of his way to do a swing number with his wife Diding. Apres, he took his radiant debutante daughter on her first dance. He was followed by Michelles brothers Michael, Jason and Marlon. Diding and her youngest daughter Joanna led the traditional 18 roses offering.
Andy Albis did a terrific job choreographing the production numbers. The debutantes Poveda pals and their preppy partners danced the elegant cotillion. Veering from the ordinary, the choreography was a lively mix of waltz, foxtrot and tango.
The Whiplashs interpretation of Tango de Roxanne from the movie Moulin Rouge was the grand finale. The program was emceed by debonair TV heartthrob popular Paolo Bediones.
Then it was time to boogie the night away, palanggas, with that swinging band the South Border.
The red carpet was certainly rolled out for Princess for a Day Michelle Robles during her entry as a lady. To Cosmo Manilles new society dahling, cheers, palangga!
