Wild Vines

Wine was in the air, dahlings, at 7 p.m. when hotshot connoisseurs were welcomed by roving waiters who offered them sparkling drinks in pink, white and red.

"Vines," palanggas, was the theme of the night at the eye-catching Carlos P. Romulo Theater of the colossal RCBC Plaza in Makati. It was the venue for the first of its kind fashion event entitled Chill Factor: Wild!

The event features 16 talented finalists from design schools all over Cosmo Manille. They paraded in their ultra-modern creations in an ode to the wild and seductive yummy flavors of Wild Vines, bottled by world-class wine-makers E & J Gallo: Strawberry White Zinfandel; Peach Chardonnay; Blackberry Merlot; Black Cherry Cabernet Sauvignon; and Raspberry Zinfandel.

The one question that brought them together that night eventually left two victors. The question was: "If Wild Vines were a piece of clothing, what would it look like?"

For one month, participants explored the unique qualities of Wild Vines – an exciting drink, a sparkling sweet and light wine, a fusion of lush fruits and traditional varietal wines, a burst of colors and sensations, youthful, contemporary, really hip and fun.

Beyond the loud buzz was a nobler goal besides just having a night of fun. Wild Vines provided young Filipino designers a unique chance to be recognized by wider audience of media personas and celebrities who could help catapult them to the top and centerstage of the local fashion scene.

Models showcased the finalists’ interpretative designs, enlivening the stage with vibrant colors and shapes. That night, palanggas, the invitees glimpsed the future stars of the local fashion scene.

The Wild Vines designs were completed with the help of renowned hair expert Franck Provost, as executed by the gorgeous mother-daughter team of Baby Cruz and Patricia Cruz-Bautista as well as the skilled hands of award-winning make-up artist Christian Flores.

Circulating with wine glass in hand were top model Wilma Doesnt; renowned photographer Rupert Jacinto; fashion star Jontie Martinez; handsome actor Toffee Calma; Seventeen Young and Co. endorser Pattie Morato; and fashion designer Danny Acuña; plus so many others like them too famous to mention, dahlings.

The real fun began when the hotshots were entertained by games that challenged the audience to guess the various flavors of Wild Vines. This was followed by a hip fashion show by the popular Cinderella.

Finally, pulsating music signaled the night’s main attraction – the designs of a new breed of local fashion designers. Of all the promising students, two were chosen as the best: Warren Popioco of Slim’s Fashion and Arts School for the men’s line and Kharla Zepeda of the College of Holy Spirit for the women’s line.

Both designers, dahlings, flaunted the trend of the decade – bare skin. Warren P.’s interpretation entitled Side Peach was a bright orange duo of slacks sprinkled with embroidered designs, and a breast-baring geometrical top. The look was finished off with Japanese inspired sandal for an altogether "off-beat" casual look. Grapes and leaves draped Kharla Z.’s lush silhouette, a belly-exposing number that reached down to the model’s ankles. The piece was entitled Crazy Sexy Blackcherry.

Judges included Toffee Calma and Wilma Doesnt; Galatea fashion designer and FDAP secretary Jontie Martinez; garments businessman and designer Tristan Yap, president of the Achievers Fashion Design Club; Cinderella’s Cielo Bulos; and Danny Acuña, couturier to some of the country’s biggest stars.

As the invitees made their exit, the empty wine bottles were reminders of a well-spent night that was a feast for the senses, dahlings.
