Instituto Cervantes hosts forum on global economy

The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Instituto Cervantes presents “¿HAY SALIDA? Is There a Way Out?: The Global Economy Today,” a forum which brings to light the current situation of the European and Spanish fiscal crisis. Participating are Spanish economists Juan L. Gómez and Luis Cañete. The forum will be moderated by the economic and commercial counselor of Spain in the Philippines, Enrique Feás. It will take place on Jan. 22, 2013 at 6 p. m. at the Salón de Actos of Instituto Cervantes.

Where exactly is the global economy headed? The same question applies to the Spanish economy. What are the necessary measures for both to overcome the crisis they are currently facing? Three Spanish economists engage in a dialogue as they discuss the state of the global and the Spanish economy today, the challenges that Europe and the rest of the world will have to overcome and the opportunities present that these countries can take advantage of to be able to work within their financial constraints.

Since the onset of the global financial crisis in 2007, countries that were affected up to this day continue to experience the effects in varying degrees. In particular, many of the countries in the Eurozone have been burdened by the devastating effects of a crisis that is also affecting economies like those of the USA and other countries. Although these nations have implemented measures which aim to alleviate the problem, many are still concerned over the effectivity of such policies.

Enrique Feás is an expert in international economics and has held several posts related to trade, international and financial issues both in the Spanish public sector and in the academe. He is a frequent lecturer on economic and commercial forums and has contributed to a number of articles in specialized economic publications.

The forum will kick off with a screening of the 2006 Carlos Iglesias’ film Un franco, 14 pesetas, a film about two Spaniards in the 1960s who leave their lives and families in Spain to emigrate to Switzerland in search of a better livelihood.

This event is presented by the Instituto Cervantes and the Economic and Commercial Office of Spain in the Philippines. Forum will fully be conducted in Spanish. Free admission on a first-come, first-served basis.

Instituto Cervantes de Manila is at 855 TM Kalaw St., Ermita, Manila. For information and reservations, call 526-1482 loc. 115.
