Undecided about where to go to college

ASK NANAY - Socorro C. Ramos -

Dear Nanay,

I need advice and I think you are the one who can help me regarding my problem about my studies. I entered college in 2008 but stopped school. Not because of financial problems, because my family always supports me; it is because I don’t have self-confidence. In our province, the best job is to be a teacher or nurse to go work abroad.

Nanay, I don’t know what is the best college to choose. According to my father, I should enroll in a private school to finish my education early, but the quality of education is poor. According to my sister, I should continue my studies at the college I entered in 2008, the one and only university in our province. According to her the quality of education is good. What I am going to do? Take my father’s or my sister’s advice? What is best, Nanay? I need your help, please.

Mulan

Dear Mulan,

It is quite difficult for me to give you any meaningful advice, especially because I do not even know what schools you are referring to.

However, what I think is important is that you should decide what you want to do. Do you want to be a teacher? A nurse? Or is there another profession that you want to pursue? And then, based on that decision, you can decide which of the two schools is better.

Maybe you can also think about which school is a better fit for you. Saan ka masaya? (Where are you happy?) Even if the school you were formerly enrolled in is a better school, you have to ask yourself why you left the school in the first place the last time you were enrolled there. Maybe you did not like the school very much? Or was there another reason?

You are fortunate that you have your family’s support and that you can afford to go to school. Do not forget that it is a privilege for you to have the luxury of going to college.   Maraming gustong mag-aral (Many want to study) but they cannot afford it. Do not waste your opportunity.

Sincerely,

Nanay

How To Sell Household Items

Dear Nanay,

I would like to know how to go about disposing of my furniture, appliances, chinaware, aircons, etc. I am selling my house to transfer to a condo. In the village I live in, garage sales are patronized by the house help. But what I am selling is quite expensive. Thank you for whatever help you can give me.

Josefina Lopez

Dear Josefina,

Maybe you can put an ad in the classifieds about your garage sale and indicate some of the bigger items you are putting on sale so that people will know what is available. The same is true if you decide to advertise your garage sale locally. Indicate the “major items” you are offering and their prices.

You should also look through the classifieds. I know there are people or companies who actually buy secondhand furniture and appliances.

The other thing you can try, if you are comfortable with a computer, is to maybe put your items for sale on the Internet in any of the many websites. If you are not computer-savvy, maybe you can ask someone you know to put the items for sale on the Internet.

Sincerely,

Nanay
