Jake Bonife dresses up Makati, shops in Divisoria

SINGLES@WORK - Aurora Diaz-Wilson -
To dress up the corporate world of Makati is one of the dreams of Jake Bonife.

Bonife owns Modista, which manufactures uniforms for PLDT, LBC and the WG&A Group, among other companies. Shopping for fabrics in Divisoria is a regular activity for 35-year-old Jake, who designs the prototype, joins the bids, drafts the proposals and supervises the production of the corporate wear.

In the 10 years our bachelorette has been supplying uniforms to the business world, much of her time has been dedicated to finding out about the latest technology for sewing and cutting. Traditionally pattern making was done manually, but with the use of computers, Jake’s way of plotting the vital points with the scanner has helped her company meet its commitments. And Jake is proud of one achievement: Delivering uniforms to suit 500 people within 45 days.

Which living person do you admire most?

My fashion guru, Ralph Lauren. I have read his biography three times. His theme song is I will Survive. He is more of an artist than a businessman.

What is your passion?

Designing clothes. Thinking of fashion icons – I call them the purists: Gabrielle Chanel’s cascading ruffles and exaggerated curving postures; Poiret’s simpler and boyish look; and Schiaparelli, the first designer to apply the appeal of costume to regular clothes.

How do you resolve your conflicts?

I am trying to resolve some of the conflicts that occurred in the past. When people get unreasonable, I decide not to see them anymore and just deal with them through fax.

What sports/hobbies do you like most?

Squash at the Polo Club with my friend, who is a member. I love to read. Sometimes I cook.

What do you feel guilty about?

Those bad decisions I made in business.

Where are you most comfortable?

I am a restless person. I can’t relax except when I am in any bed, reading. In the bathroom, I sit, smoke, sketch and read for hours. I have my folding table there with my papers, magazines and ashtray, plus my stock of San Mig Lights.

What film influenced your life?

I never get tired of watching Pretty Woman. I admire Julia Roberts’ character. She was determined to improve her life and was courageous enough to think about turning her back on her profession as a prostitute.

What book influenced your life?

The Branding
is a woman’s book that teaches women how to create an image for their brand and profession. For example, the author describes how Oprah packaged herself as being a totally sincere and honest person. As a result of this image, when Oprah endorses something, people believe her. Martha Stewart’s image is that of a strong, hardworking perfectionist.

What is your greatest fear?

To commit the same mistakes in love and work.

What is your motto?

"There are things more important than rejection – my goals and dreams."

If you had the chance to change something in your life, what would that be?

I don’t have the courage to express what I really want to say. I want to have the ability to negotiate and to say what I really think and feel.

What is your greatest extravagance?

Oh…my shoes. I have this fetish about shoes, and if I had more money, I would be like Imelda and have more shoes.

Which historical character would you like to have been?

Coco Chanel, who is one of the most brilliant designers. I like her regal style. She really had élan.

Name a moment that brings back happy memories.

The best was in ‘95 when I was with friends in New York. We watched Phantom of the Opera and then went to a disco called Tattoo. It’s a wild place that is unforgettable.

What do you consider your greatest achievement?

My spiritual growth. My main focus now is the achievement of more detachment and better reflection. I try to love people and have learned the meaning of forgiveness.

What is your idea of perfect happiness?

To be with the man I can love till I die.

Which famous quotation would you have wanted to be the author of?

"He who wrestles with you always strengthens your nerves and sharpens your skills. Your antagonist is always, in the end, your best helper."

What does your dad often say to you?

"You’re gonna make it, kid."

What is your greatest regret?

I have on occasion made wrong business moves and my setback or downfall has affected many people...most of them are friends. And as usual, when you make bad business decisions, money is lost along with the relationship.
