LBC’s Javier Mantecon identifies with the Road Runner

SINGLES@WORK - Aurora Diaz-Wilson -
To get to Javier Mantecon’s office, one has to go around helicopters and private planes parked in the hangars near the Manila Domestic Airport. One gets the feeling that speed and top security are of high priorities in this business. Since Javy works with LBC, receiving the balikbayan boxes sent from abroad and making sure they are forwarded quickly to their recipients in the Philippines are of utmost importance.

As executive director for European and Asian operations, our 31-year-old bachelor is responsible for marketing LBC services to Philippine communities abroad. Marketing is Javy’s forte and facilitating money transfers has helped build this courier service into a company with more than 300 branches in the country. Javy, 5’11" , has 60 people in his department. While he reflects on being content with what he has and identifying with the Road Runner, Javy reveals his embarrassment on producing a concert that was a flop.

What is your most fervent wish?

To be content with what I have. Very simple but very hard to achieve.

How do you resolve your conflicts?

Everything can be resolved through communication. With Piatco, for example, they stopped talking so it is in the courts now. Keep talking to each other and it will always be a win-win situation.

What sports / hobbies do you like most?

I am very athletic. Soccer, basketball, volleyball, fishing, water sports, golf. My whole childhood revolved around sports.

Where are you most comfortable ?

My house is my sanctuary. It’s all about family.

What book influenced your life?

The Road Less Traveled
because it pertains to what I really try to do – to just be content even if society and culture influence me otherwise.

What is the trait you most deplore in yourself?

Being a Scorpio, I take things very deeply. When I am hurt, I am really hurt. It is pretty hard to forget and becomes a mind conflict.

Which living person do you admire most?

My dad, Jose Mantecon. I like his character, his honesty and sincerity.

What is the trait you most deplore in others?

When they put up a front. Why don’t they just say, "I don’t like you but I will be civil with you."

How do you start your day?

It varies. Sometimes I wake up early, other times very late. I handle Europe and Asia so the time zones differ. Sometimes we start at 4 p.m. I always start with a prayer to thank the Lord for yesterday and the opportunity to do something today.

What is your motto?

Find my peace of mind every day in everything I do. Most of the time, I do not conform to society so I do what I think will give me peace of mind.

What is your current state of mind?

Confused with an internal battle in finding contentment and conforming to society.

Which hero of fiction can you most identify with?

The Road Runner, purely because I like to play jokes on people. He is very light and with lots of clean fun.

What is your greatest fear?

Being unhappy; not finding contentment.

What do you most value in your friends?

Our camaraderie. Most of us grew up together as classmates. We pursue our own interests and are very competitive with each other.

If you had the chance to change something in your life, what would that be?

I would like to be more forgiving.

What is your greatest extravagance?

Watching movies at home with my high-tech equipment.

Which historical character would you like to have been?

President Marcos, who could have changed where we are today. He had the biggest opportunity and we are paying for it all now.

Name a moment that brings back happy memories.

We had a family vacation in the States and we went to a park. The family, including my 60-year-old grandma, played a game of kickball.

Which famous quotation would you have wanted to be the author of ?

"Why do what you can tomorrow when you can do it today?"

What does your dad often say to you ?

Just go there and do your best.

Name an embarrassing moment at work .

We produced a concert abroad and it did not do well at all. It was embarrassing to attend a concert that was empty.
