MANILA, Philippines — Controversial UK artist Banksy’s “Banksy Universe” exhibit has opened in The M (Metropolitan Museum) in Bonifacio Global City, Taguig City last May 7.
This, despite that the social activist has stated in Pest Control Office, his official and only authenticator, that "Banksy is not involved or associated with any of" the exhibits of works opening around the world.
On-view until November, the exhibit, like the mysterious street artist himself whose identity is still uncertain, has caused quite a stir online since Banksy, known for his public art, has not been expected to display his works “for aesthetic value.”
But in this modern world of K-pop and “aesthetic,” “Banksy Universe” presents itself as an interactive showcase of Banksy’s works, which one can take pictures with as if one is part of the artpiece.
Apart from Banksy’s sarcastic and subverted takes on popular artworks such as Andy Warhol’s Marilyn Monroe pictures and Claude Monet’s “Water Lily Pond,” on display are his satirical works on the war in Gaza and the English royalty, among others.
A must-see is “Love is in the Bin,” dubbed by Sotheby's as “first artwork in history to have been created live during an auction” as the 2018 painting was partially shredded through a built-in shredder in the frame, right after it was sold for £1 million (over P74 million). After three years, it resold for £18 million (over P1 billion).
