The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Philippine music icon Fides Cuyugan-Asensio and environmental activist Ophie Mananquil-Bakker will sing with the Manila Symphony Orchestra (MSO) in a “Musical Tribute to Education and the Environment” on Nov. 25, Wednesday, at 6 p.m. at the Ayala Museum.

Keynote speakers are environmental advocates Senator Loren Legarda and the MVP Group of Companies.

Songs about the environment, nature and youth leadership will be rendered by soprano Asensio, such as Nature Boy and Summertime, while mezzo-soprano Bakker will sing Trees, The Prayer and Wind Beneath My Wings.

Tenors Lorenzo Garcia, Josh Tiu, Henry Jacques Bakker and Jacob Bakker will perform Exodus, Anthem, You Raise Me Up and Tulips from Amsterdam. Southeastern College Children’s Choir will sing We Are the World and Paraiso.

The benefit concert-tribute was initiated by FEED (Fostering Education and Environment for Development Inc.) patrons Lyn Gamboa and Linda Mañalac, who said, “We encouraged FEED to share their mission with a wider public audience to showcase theirs and their partners’ accomplishments through this musical tribute.”

FEED president Bakker said, “Everyone is performing from the heart — communicating our appeal for the continued endorsement of much-needed educational and environmental progress in the Philippines — through their voices, musicality and dedication to these causes.”

Full proceeds of the concert will go directly to FEED’s tree-planting programs, scholarships for underprivileged youth, research and livelihood and social forestry projects in agriculture, environment, farming and forestry.

The event is presented in collaboration with Manila North Tollways Corp.,  Metro Pacific Tollways Corp., Congressman Victor and former Mayor Mary Jane Ortega of La Union, FEED partners and patrons Adopt a Coral, Mario and Nina Aguas, Auggie Cordero, Patis Tesoro Boutique, Ben and Cynthia Ching, Kelly Deuster, Aaron Budd, Neil and Lyn Gamboa, Gregorio and Lina Gervasio, Martha Horrigan, Linda and Tong Mañalac, Peachy Mañalac, Manoling Morato, Missionaries of the Poor, Pampanga State Agricultural University, Tony Pastor, Philippine Army and Air Force, former ambassador Menchu Salas, Tanlak Beach Resort and Dive Center, University of the Philippines Los Baños, Larry and Winston Uy, and Wong Chu King Foundation.  Overseas partners include Erik Eggarter of Panama; Keith and Rachel Robinson of Zambawood; FEED incorporator Perlita Tiro and Ernie of Singapore; Mananquil and Puno-Pineda families of USA; Siemann (Germany); and Munting Nayon (The Netherlands).
