Eric Guazon’s ‘Specific Target’ at Hiraya Gallery

The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Filipino artist Eric Guazon’s seventh solo exhibition “Specific Target” looks at the furtive uses of technology in warfare. While Guazon’s works still incorporate the theme and iconography of earlier pieces, he introduces a new icon in this series: the shadows of drones. Drones are technological innovations in warfare, unmanned yet controlled from afar. They further dehumanize war because they operate from a distance, pervasive but rendered invisible by technological advances. Drones speak of imperceptible presences, invisible and untraceable.

“This is why I chose to represent them as shadows: they hover, record and mercilessly attack. They are enhanced and infinitely more dangerous weapons of surveillance and destruction, “Guazon states.

Eric Guazon is a visual artist whose recent exhibitions explored themes of war, power and loss. His mixed media works are about warfare’s global reach, its complex economies and the harrowing casualty that is war’s ultimate end.

“Specific Target” runs until Jan. 6, 2015. Hiraya Gallery is at 530 U.N. Avenue, Ermita, Manila. For information, call 523-3331 or email dididee@hiraya.com or visit www.hiraya.com.
