‘Pilgrim Images’ at Pinto Art Museum

The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines -  In line with its annual tradition of featuring art and culture in May, Pinto Art Museum celebrates the Antipolo pilgrimage season with an exhibition series titled “Pilgrim Images,” which opens on May 25 at Pinto Art Museum, 1 Sierra Madre St, Grand Heights, Antipolo City, Rizal.. The show runs until June 22.

The show features the works of Luis Ac-ac, Mariko Jacinto and Alab Pagarigan.

Ac-ac, a multi-awarded sculptor from the woodcarving town of Paete, Laguna, portrays people from a time long past — fisherfolk, vendors, Angelus prayers and local beauties — in his series of carvings. Ac-ac’s figuration is distinct in its linear quality and clear, illustrative renderings of characters, which echoes early Filipino Modern art and design.

Jacinto and Pagarigan render other states of mind in their back-to-back presentations of select works. Jacinto’s paintings on canvas — inspired by Buddhist practice — describe mental images emerging from meditation and are contemplative musings of color and form. Pagarigan’s wire and resin sculptures describe scenes from dreams or the imagery of sleep and quietude. His surreal work integrates the exhibition space to weave in the dimensions of the psychic with the physical.

Both exhibitions provide vistas and glimpses into other worlds, both in time, space and mind as pilgrimages of the consciousness to “elsewheres.”

Part of the opening ceremonies on May 25 is a musical performance by young classical guitarist Rafael Ronquillo. He will play Sonata in three movements by Spanish composer Joaquin Turina (1882-1949). Ronquillo is a graduate of the University of Santo Tomas Conservatory of Music and is a local Antipolo musician.
