Raul Isidro at Ayala Museum

The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Raul Isidro showcases the spontaneity and vibrancy of his signature abstract-expressionist style of art in “Raul Isidro: Abstract Landscapes,” which opens tomorrow at Ayala Museum, Makati Ave. corner Dela Rosa St., Greenbelt Park, Makati City.

After working his way up from poverty, Isidro is now one of the most esteemed artists and art educators in the country. He was named one of the Ten Outstanding Young Men in the Philippines (TOYM) for Fine Arts in 1979 and has received numerous other awards and recognitions for his works.

As an educator, he worked as an art professor at the Philippine Women’s University from 1969-1975 and director from 1975 to 1977, before becoming a full-time artist from 1977 to the present. Isidro always believed that “art must be felt to be truly enjoyed.” So he became one of the first Filipino artists to hold workshops for young and aspiring artists in his hometown of Calbayog, Samar, and other provinces.

Isidro has always been a proponent of Philippine indigenous art. He is known as one of the first contemporary artists to study Philippine indigenous designs and materials, and include these in his works.
