Gallery News: Manuel Ocampo, Catalina Africa and Ernest Concepcion at Finale Art File

MANILA, Philippines - Manuel Ocampo, Catalina Africa and Ernest Concepcion hold simultaneous solo shows — “Following the Demon of Fatality Ingested Revolt of Deviation,” “Floating Corner,” and “Transformations 2013,” respectively — which are on view until Oct. 5 at Finale Art File, Warehouse 17, La Fuerza, 2241 Chino Roces Ave., Makati City.

In “Following the Demon of Fatality Ingested Revolt of Deviation,” Ocampo combines both gestural abstraction and kitsch, using pastiche to create parodies of modernism.

In “Floating Corner,” Africa combines her paintings with other images — crayon markings and photographs, tents and plywood cutouts — that draw out parallels between abstract painting and the forms of everyday life.

“Transformations 2013” is based on Concepcion’s 1998 thesis work for the late Roberto Chabet’s class at UP CFA: three videos documenting the journey of three enamel paintings around Manila.

‘Art + Technology’ at SM Malls

The Metropolitan Museum of Manila, in partnership with Samsung Philippines and SM Supermalls, presents “Art + Technology,” which is slated from Sept. 26 to Oct. 2 at SM Mall of Asia, and from Oct. 8 to 13 at SM Aura.

Met Museum’s first off-site exhibition in 2013 on the emergence of technology as a popular art medium features the works of Ramon Estrella, Kidlat Tahimik, Peque Gallaga, Louie Cordero, Johnny and Miguel Alcazaren, Victor Balanon, VJ Villafranca, Diokno Pasilan, Cocoy Lumbao, among others. It will also feature a selection of videos from Animahenasyon, a Philippine Animation Festival.

‘Women on the Glow’ at Forbes Park Pavilion

Zonta marked its 25th anniversary with “Women on the Glow” exhibit, which is on view at the Forbes Park Pavilion, Makati City.

Drawing on the efforts of 25 remarkable women, the venture aims to aid the women and children under SAGIP, the club’s principal beneficiary.

The show features portraits of unique individuals who are all integral to Zonta’s operations. Each portrait, taken by Paolo Pineda, is a testament to the society’s 30 years of service. All proceeds will take SAGIP one step closer to achieving its dream of eradicating violence in the home.

‘Filipino Art: Culture, Tradition and Evolution’ at PBCOM Makati

In celebration of its 74th year, the Philippine Bank of Communications (PBCOM) teamed up with the UP Artist’s Circle Alumni Association in presenting “Filipino Art: Culture, Tradition and Evolution,” which is on view at the PBCOM Makati Business Center, Ayala Ave., Makati City.

Featured are works of Leonilo Doloricon, Bernie Pacquing, Ricky Ambagan, Pete Jimenez and Jose Manuel Sicat.

A short lecture on the evolution of Philippine art was given by Karen Flores, president of Filipino Visual Arts and Design Rights.
