Beatriz Robles at Ayala Museum’s ArtistSpace

MANILA, Philippines - Beatriz Robles has interspersed geometric patterns as icon motifs with outlines of musical instruments against a washed-out background in “Waltz of the Flowers,” which is on view until June 11 at ArtistSpace, Ayala Museum, Makati City.

Robles understands the power of recurring motifs to enforce a consistent aesthetic style — similar to how archetypes are used to involve the reader in a narrative. The use of outlines of musical instruments marks her works as distinctly personal, reflecting as it is, her own experiences and preferences.

For example, “Amber French Horn” — with its singular outline figure — emphasizes the beauty of a musical French horn solo.

“Citrine Saxophone” has all the motifs, with its geometric patterns resembling flora while a saxophone outline plays on the side. Viewing Robles works is like  listening to a musical composition, but with visual aesthetics.

Robles has a BFA in Creative Writing from the Ateneo de Manila University and is a trained clarinetist, under the tutelage of Ariel Sta. Ana. A publihed writer, she has a non-fiction book, Life Through Letters: A Writer’s Journey from Sunrise to Sunset.
