Important Philippine art sale at Salcedo Auctions
MANILA, Philippines - Salcedo Auctions announces its sale of “Important Philippine Art†on Mar. 9 at 2 p.m. Held twice a year, this auction offers serious collectors an opportunity to acquire key works by the country’s most significant visual artists.
The works on offer have been selected from distinguished private collections by the auction house’s art advisor, Ramon E.S. Lerma, director and chief curator of the Ateneo Art Gallery.
A rare gem in this sale is “Castilla IX†by Fernando Zóbel. This early work from the late 1950s marks an important point in the artist’s career. Other highly notable works by modern masters include a 1966 oil on canvas by National Artist Vicente Manansala; “Bodegon en Azul,†a sizeable 1963 oil on canvas by Federico Aguilar Alcuaz; National Artist Jose Joya’s “Two Faces of Villafernandina,†the largest work by the artist to come to auction in recent time; and a 1961 Ang Kiukok oil and encaustic on board depicting bananas marked by a stark elegance and simplicity of form.
Contemporary Philippine art also makes a very strong presence in this sale, including a post-colonial critique in woven canvas by Alfredo Esquillo; Geraldine Javier’s “Enrapturedâ€; “Til the Morning Comes,†a highly significant work by Ronald Ventura; John Santos’ “Looking Upâ€; an award-winning and vibrant acrylic on canvas by Louie Cordero; and a mixed media masterpiece by Santiago Bose.
Selected artworks are also being auctioned to benefit the Chameleon Association, which runs centers in Passi City, Iloilo to protect and rehabilitate young girls aged 5 to17, who have suffered physical and sexual abuse, and allows underprivileged children to continue their studies through a sponsorship program it runs in its neighboring communities.
