Imao, Turalba and Zamuco to talk about their latest works at the Lopez Museum

The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - The Lopez Museum presents artists Josephine Turalba, Toym Imao and Eric Zamuco on Mar. 9, from 2 to 4 p.m., who will be discussing the concept and creative process behind their works in museum’s latest exhibit, “Grounded.”

Toym Imao uses his sculptures to bring attention to specific social issues, as he did with Ship, Shift, Strip, a commentary on the USS Guardian that ran aground last month at the Tubbataha Reef. Josephine Turalba will discuss her installation, Scandals, which encourages guests to wear sandals made of out bullet shells then walk on a wooden platform while viewing glass negatives of images taken during the American period. Eric Zamuco invites visitors to look up to see his ceiling installation of gestural imprints on plexiglass that reflect his experience and feelings of displacement while living and studying overseas.

Curated by Back to Square Juan artistic director Claro Ramirez, “Grounded” asks how art can be seen as a means to take flight while remaining anchored at the same time. Contemporary works of guest artists Alma Quinto, Goldie Poblador, Eric Zamuco, Josephine Turalba, Toym Imao, Barbara Hlali, Ahmed Al Shaer and Khaled Hafez are on display along with the museum’s collection of Amorsolos, Lunas, Hidalgos, Manuel Blanco’s Flora de Filipinas, and period images from the Ambassador Jose Teodoro bequest.

“Grounded” will run until Aug. 3. Registration fee for the lecture is P120 and P100 for students. The Lopez Memorial Museum is located at Benpres Building Exchange Road corner Meralco Ave., Pasig City, open Monday to Saturday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., except holidays. For information and registration, call 631-2417 or e-mail lmmpasig@lopez-museum.org.
