‘Downpour’ at 371 Art Space

The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Francis Bejar, Chalk Zaldivar and the Gerilya art group answer the metaphysical question of what lies between the real and unreal in “Downpour” on view until Dec. 29 at 371 Art Space, The Collective, 7274 Malugay Street, San Antonio Village, Makati City.

Zaldivar uses the theme of societal apocalypse for his “End of the World Lectures Series.” Utilizing ink lines to explore grotesqueries of the human condition — through the corruption of the figurative form to letter art — Zaldivar examines the inner demons of humanity and how it relates to visual art.

Bejar, on the other hand, combines found objects with metal and epoxy to create installation pieces that show the thought process of suffering. His “Alam Mo Kung Ano Kaya Kong Gawin Pag Di Mo Ko Binigyan Ng Pagkain” considers the state of mankind as a prisoner of society. His “Long Time No See” comments on humanity’s incessant consumerism, replacing the head of a figure with a package of Tic Tac, and placing that figure in a lamp-like prison. Gerilya, as an art group, focuses on the aesthetics of graffiti, street art, and illustration in their contributions. The resulting works have a very pop-feel that agitates the urban consciousness of their audience.
