I ink therefore I ain’t

Igan D’Bayan - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Tattoo you, too.

I’ve always wanted an inverted crucifix tattoo on my arm, but I’ve always chicken-shat at the last moment. I thought the 12th incarnation of the "Dutdutan" tattoo festival would be the one. But me getting a tattoo would break my mother’s heart — she who had to endure decades of disappointment from me. Maybe “13” is the magic number.

The recent festival presented by Tribal Gear Philippines saw the three halls of World Trade Center in Pasay packed with artists, collectors and ink enthusiasts. There were 130 booths set up, featuring homegrown tattooists as well as visiting inkers. It was a landmark rock and roll circus. There was a tattoo competition, a drum-kit duel (with the winner jamming with Cypress Hill’s Eric Bobo), a hardcore Universal Reality Combat Championship (URCC) exhibition fight, a cosplay-themed bikini contest by FHM, pole-dancing tricks by the Russian Bells, loud rock ‘n’ roll (by the likes of Franco and Urbandub, among others), and with a troop of special guests: Tribal founder and Tribal Worldwide Clique head honcho Bobby Ruiz, Tribal Gear resident artists Big Tiny and Alex Garcia, and the infamous Sen Dog and Eric Bobo of Cypress Hill.

Insane in the membrane, indeed.

“Dutdutan XII” was presented by Tribal Gear; co-presented by Skinworkz Tattoo, PhilTAG and Colt 45; and sponsored by Pepsi, Kenny Rogers, JB Music, Padis Point, AEROMED, and Avatar Tattoo.

An inkling: THe next "Dutdutan" will  be bigger and helluva lot inkier.
