New books at Yuchengco Museum

- The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines – Here are the latest titles at the Yuchengco Museum.

In the Shape of Tradition: Indigenous Art of the Northern Philippines (P8,500) by Eric Moltzau Anderson is the first comprehensive book entirely focused on North Luzon indigenous art since 1890. Dealing with the traditional cultures of the Isneg, Itneg, Kalinga, Gaddang, Bontoc, Kankanay, Ifugao, Ibaloy, Ilongot, and Negrito, the book is illustrated with about 500 mostly previously unpublished objects from ethnographic museums around the world.

Tabayag: Lime Containers of the Cordilleras (P2,000), from the collection of BenCab and published by BenCab Art Foundation, features BenCab’s collection of over a hundred lime containers. Tabayag not only sheds light on this vanishing craft, but gives the artisans who make these works of functional art the recognition they deserve. Wig Tysmans captures the sheer beauty and unique character of each of the pieces in 200 color photos.

Land of the Morning: Treasures of the Philippines (P1,250) by David Baradas, San Francisco Craft and Folk Art Museum, and the National Commission for Culture and the Arts, is an exhibition catalogue that accompanied the San Francisco Craft and Folk Art Museum’s 1995 exhibit of the same title. The exhibit was comprised of 75 objects, dating from 500 to 1900, and from a wide range of island cultures. Pieces include stone carving, ceramics, metalwork, wood carving, textiles, and jewelry.

Bulol Ifugao Rice Granary Gods from the BenCab Museum Collection Postcards (P400) features bulol or rice granary gods that are handcarved from wood by indigenous communities of the Cordilleras, mainly the Ifugao. This 24-piece white postcard set features bulol figures.
