Igan D'Bayan at The Pocket Universe, SaGuijo

- The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Igan D’Bayan presents his most recent works in “Mysterious Diseases,” which opens on July 10, 8 p.m., at The Pocket Universe Art Collective (PUAC), second floor of SaGuijo Café+Bar.

The artist says this is his sort-of love letter to horror/sci-fi/survivalist movies where strange experiments (the sources of much, much dread) are usually going on and which spell doom for the protagonists. “Art, after all, is one strange experiment itself,” D’Bayan explains. “It is a wellspring of despair.”

In “Mysterious Diseases,” the artist has created portraits inspired by movies such as Dead Snow and Taxideremia, Bizarre and Rue Morgue magazines, as well as a “really sick clinical atlas of dermatology” by a Filipino doctor.

D’Bayan concludes, “Several of these portraits — Jesus and Hitler as zombies — can be seen as a commentary on the supposed ‘Death of Painting.’ Well, allow me to steal a line from Frank Zappa. Painting is not dead; it just smells funny.”

The show is presented by PUAC in cooperation with The Crucible Gallery. The opening cocktails is on July 10, Tuesday, 8 p.m., with performances by The Black Vomits, Turbo Goth, Noli & The Tangeres, among other bands. The show is supported by San Miguel Beer.

The show is on view until Aug. 4.

The Pocket Universe Art Collective is at the second floor of SaGuijo Café + Bar, 7612, Guijo St., San Antonio Village, Makati City.
