‘Self Portrait, Rose Period’ at Big and Small Gallery
Mendez Big and Small Gallery presents “Self Portrait, Rose Period” currently on view at the gallery, fourth floor, SM Megamall A, Mandaluyong City.
“Self Portrait, Rose Period” is a collection of 18in x 24in paintings on canvas, rendered in oil and acrylic. These are the most recent works of the artists from 6 o’clock Habit, namely, Aleah Angeles, Jayson Cortez, Edwin Martinez, Cyril Turao and Black Jack Group namely Emil Alarcon, Jessa Almirol, Jay Bermudez, Rey Bollozos, Reynard Borillo, Melanio Bulauitan III, Dodong Caballero, Lawrence Cervantes, Joel Chavez, Gabriel Escudero, Aubrey Fajardo, Yayie Garcia, Rafael La Madrid, Roa Malubay, Jay Marquez, Martin Maturan, Alvin Paraguison, Marvin Quizon, Marc Aran Reyes, Alvin Sales, Jhong Tangiday, Jay Torres, Jazmine Villanueva, Rodney Yap with guest artist Joey Cobcobo.

Four artists at Now Gallery
Norberto Roldan, Mideo Cruz, Anton del Castillo and Leo Aguilar showcase their latest works in an exhibition on view until May 26 at Now Gallery, Unit MO5, mezzanine floor, Ecoplaza Bldg., 2305 Pasong Tamo Ext., Makati City
Norberto Roldan uses found text and found old paintings, continuing his predilection for history, both real and imagined, personal and public, and how they stand side by side with contemporary issues like religion, war and the global economy.
For this exhibition, Mideo Cruz critiques the global art market through the world’s richest living artist, Damien Hirst. Cruz shares, “The Damien Hirst effect for me is the speculative capital marked on the signature of the artists without the necessary readings on the context of the work.”
Anton del Castillo’s discipline includes constraints demanding exceptional workmanship, and a certain perfection to the craft. His work is thereby bold in its very nature, with his direct focus on conflict and religion.
Leo Aguilar explains, “What could be simpler than lines? A line is a very powerful expression, be it on its old tattooing culture definition, or a more modern (art) concept. Lines have a calming effect.”

Juno Parungao at Young Artists’ Studio Gallery
JIV Manila, a group of artists forwarding esoteric art, presents an exhibit featuring the works of visual artist-astrologer Juno Parungao, which is on view until May 20 at Young Artists’ Studio Gallery.
“Written: The Truth about Crystals” features 17 acrylic-on-canvas paintings inspired by gems and crystals. Each painting shows the artist’s interpretation of characteristics, purposes and significance of stones like diamond, garnett, peridot, emerald, tiger’s eye, moonstone, citrine, lapis lazuli and rose quarts, among others. The paintings are non-representational but showcase the qualities of stones in terms of color, figurations and textures.
Artist Juno Parungao is known for small-scale paintings based on astrology and psychology. She merges Western and Eastern astrology, gemology and psychology in filling up canvases with philosophical visualizations through a play of colors and textures utilizing other materials such as stones, beads, papers and found objects.
