Romantic music with Rachelle Gerodias at the PPO Concert Series
MANILA, Philippines - Noted Filipino soprano and Aliw Awardee for Best Female Classical Artist Rachelle Gerodias performs at the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra’s (PPO) seventh concert series on March 16, at the Cultural Center of the Philippines’ Tanghalang Nicanor Abelardo (Main Theater) at 8 p.m. PPO music director Olivier Ochanine conducts.
Highlight of the program includes Anton Bruckner’s Symphony No. 4 Romantic, other arias and kundimans.
Gerodias is one of the Philippines’ most awarded sopranos. She won the Aliw Award for Best Female Classical Artist twice and the first prize in the Civic Morning Musicals Vocal Competition in Syracuse, New York in 1995. She graduated from the University of Sto. Tomas, which later granted her the Young Thomasian Alumna Achievement Award. She received her master’s degree in Vocal Performance and Vocal Literature from the famed Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York. She also holds a Professional Diploma in Operatic studies from the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts.
In 2006, Gerodias portrayed the role of Susanna in the Singapore Lyric Opera Production of Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro where she was praised by critics. She collaborated with top musicians in the Philippines and abroad to include, among others, the Vienna Philharmonic principal clarinetist Peter Schmidle, Georg Tintner, Yaacov Bergman, National Artist Rolando Tinio and Julian Quirit. She was soloist of the PPO, Manila Philharmonic Orchestra, San Miguel Philharmonic Orchestra, San Miguel Master Chorale, The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, The International Bamboo Organ Festival, The Bangkok Symphony Orchestra, Eastman School of Music Symphony Orchestra, The Pacific Music Festival Orchestra and the World Youth Orchestra and Chorus. She was the soprano soloist of the Northeast German Philharmonic Orchestra under Koji Kawamoto in the 2003 Toyota Classics concert in Manila.
She also made her European debut in the role of Liu in Puccini’s Turandot at the Volskoper Wien in Vienna, Austria. She has collaborated with renowned Italian opera soprano Mirella Freni, making her the only Filipina, so far, to have worked with the great diva. At present, Gerodias is a voice faculty-member at the UST Conservatory of Music and has been invited as guest master class teacher and jury in the Festa Canzone International Art Song Festival held in Singapore.
