Igan D'Bayan's recent works at SM Art Center
MANILA, Philippines - Igan D’Bayan presents his recent artworks in a show titled “The Headf*cks,” on view from Dec. 10 to 22 at SM Art Center, fourth floor SM Megamall A, Mandaluyong City. The show is organized by The Crucible Gallery.
One of the paintings on featured in the show is D’Bayan’s version of Juan Luna’s “Spoliarium.” The artist says, “I love that painting so much that I just wanted to screw it up, adding images from video games such as Resident Evil and Dead Space, as well as Ghost Rider comics. Frank from Donnie Darko is there also. It’s like covering your favorite song — your version is going to suck, but it’s your version.”
Featured also are 8”x10” portraits of real-life figures (David Lynch, Aleister Crowley, Rasputin, etc.) and characters from movies (Drag Me To Hell, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, etc.). D’Bayan concludes, “They are parodies of fine-art portraits — with careful consideration in terms of the lighting, the palette, and the brushstroke. Think of Leatherface or the old lady in Insidious visiting the studio for a sitting — funnily scary as hell. But these ‘Headf*ck’ paintings aspire toward something else entirely.”
The closing reception is on Dec. 17, Saturday, 6 p.m., featuring a performance of rock band The Black Vomits, composed of Joyen Santos on vocals, Bryan Escueta on guitar, Julius Sanvictores on drums and Igan D’Bayan on bass.
