Instituto Cervantes photography workshop features Txema Salvans

-

MANILA, Philippines - Instituto Cervantes, in collaboration with the Spanish Embassy and the Metropolitan Museum, will hold a mini-workshop on photography featuring one of the leading contemporary Spanish photographers Txema Salvans on Dec. 3, 2 p.m., at the Metropolitan Museum.

Titled “Encuentros en la fotografía” (Encounters in Photography), this three-hour workshop will have Salvans sharing his concept of the art of photography, his techniques and the highlights of his career. The discussion is also aimed at strengthening your framing skills and capturing what you see in the world.

With the influx of electronics in the market, as well as the widespread popularity of photo-sharing sites, photography is back in the forefront of popular hobbies today. Almost everyone, both young and old alike, has some form of camera from cell phones to DSLR’s. And there’s a reason: images hold tremendous power, from the media to producing extraordinary moments on the street to special memories with family.

The workshop is open whether you’re an experienced fine art photographer, a serious amateur photographer or just starting to learn about photography for the first time. Registration is free on a first-come, first-served basis but interested participants must signup by calling Instituto Cervantes at 526-1482 local 115. Deadline of registration is until Dec. 2.

Born in Barcelona, Spain in 1971, Salvans is a documentary photographer with a special interest in how we humans spend our free time. He received the Best Spanish Photography Book Award for Nice To Meet You during the 2005 PhotoEspaña Awards, a volume filled with snapshots of his travels along the Mediterranean coast stopping at the places where entire families enjoy their leisure on a small beach between the sea and concrete.

Salvans is also one of the 15 photographers part of the exhibition “Photo a Photo. A portrait of Spain” at the Metropolitan Museum. The exhibit, running until Jan. 14, 2012, is a visual trajectory showing the evolution of Spanish cities and their inhabitants from the fifties until the present day focusing in the two cities that Rizal lived in: Madrid and Barcelona.

On Nov. 30, Salvans will meet photography students from the School of Arts and Design (De La Salle–College of Saint Benilde) to share with them his experience and insights on photography and start working on a photography project of the Filipino youth in Manila. From Dec. 1 to 6, Salvans will follow a different student every day and shoot their daily life to show through his point of view the young Filipino society.

“Encuentros en la fotografía” is organized by Instituto Cervantes de Manila in collaboration with the Spanish Embassy in the Philippines, the Metropolitan Museum of Manila and Spanish Agency International Cooperation for Development (AECID).

Admission to the workshop is free. For more information, please call 526-1482 local 115 or visit http://manila.cervantes.es. Instituto Cervantes de Manila is at 855 T.M. Kalaw St., Ermita.
