UPAA and UP Alumni artists celebrate women in art show

-

MANILA, Philippines - The University of the Philippines Alumni Association Inc. (UPAA) presents “Women” — an ongoing art exhibition celebrating the beauty, glory and spirit of the Filipino woman — at the second floor of Ang Bahay ng Alumni, Magsaysay Ave., UP Diliman, Quezon City.

Featured in the exhibit are the works of 13 members of the UP Centennial Alumni Artists, namely Angel Cacnio, Mar Bongalon, Romeo Carlos, Cris Cruz, Gig de Pio, Rick de Villa, Tess Duldulao, Ding Hidalgo, Ben Infante, Pete Jimenez, Norlie Meimban, Jonah Mar Salvosa and Anna Vergel. The 43 paintings, done in oil, pastel, acrylic and watercolor, and one sculpture in iron, show the different aspects of womanhood, including mother and child, scenes of women engaged in day-to-day activities, portraits and nudes, all rendered in a variety of styles ranging from traditional to impressionistic. The exhibit runs until Oct. 30.

This is the sixth major exhibition of the UP Centennial Alumni Artists. Their first was the highly successful “100 Years, 100 Nudes” exhibit held in 2008 at Gateway Mall, Cubao, in celebration of the University’s centennial. The 13 UP alumni artists whose works are featured in this exhibit are also members of the Philippine Portrait Artists Guild, which seeks to raise portraiture as a legitimate field in art.

Enrollment is now ongoing for a short course on basic painting to be held Wednesdays and Sundays beginning Oct. 2. The course, to consist of 12 painting sessions of four hours each will be taught by UP artists. Those interested to enroll may inquire at the UPAA office or call Jenny at 920-6868, 920-6871, or 920-6875.
