Dawn Zulueta stars in 'A Little Night Music'
MANILA, Philippines - Award-winning film and television actress Dawn Zulueta returns to the legitimate stage in Stephen Sondheim’s A Little Night Music, a waltz-kissed musical comedy about love and passion.
Inspired by Ingmar Bergman’s film Smiles of a Summer Night, A Little Night Music tracks the romantic liaisons of couples. Set in Europe in the early 20th century, a middle-age lawyer Fredrick, a glamorous actress Desirée, and her lover Count Malcolm converge upon a country estate.
Once there, their affairs with one another play out in a manner that is both whimsical and tragic. Fredrick is stuck in an unconsummated marriage to his young trophy wife, and when he resumes an affair with Desirée, the jealous Count Malcolm sets off a chain of events that entangles all in a complex web of romance, accompanied by Sondheim’s trademark waltz.
This production is considered one of Sondheim’s most accomplished and when it was first staged on Broadway in 1973, it played an amazing 601 performances. It subsequently won the Tony Award for Best Musical. The Broadway revival continues to play to sold-out crowds. It starred Catherine Zeta-Jones in a Tony Award winning performance, and now stars Bernadette Peters. It features Stephen Sondheim’s most famous song to date, Send in the Clowns.
Directed by Bobby Garcia, A Little Night Music will also run at Singapore’s Esplanade Theater after it’s Manila engagement.
Bobby Garcia says, “I am thrilled to be directing A Little Night Music, which is one of Sondheim’s finest musicals. To have an actress of Dawn Zulueta’s talent, class and grace join this production is a dream come true. We are all also very excited to take the show to Singapore after the Manila run at the Esplanade Theater, which is one of the most beautiful theatre’s in the world.”
A Little Night Music marks Dawn Zulueta’s return to musical theater after playing Elsa Montes in Larawan over 10 years ago.
