WiFi Body 5 at CCP

MANILA, Philippines - See various independent dance artists perform in the 5th WiFi Body Independent Contemporary Dance Festival from July 2 to 4, 2010 at the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP). A project of the Contemporary Dance Network Philippines (CNDP) in partnership with the CCP, the event gathers dance artists who have been producing and creating exciting, innovative works in contemporary dance in recent years in the country. The event will likewise be held on other dates at Greenbelt 5, the Dance Forum Studio-Theater (36-E West Avenue, Quezon City) and Lyceum University.

This year, WiFi body 5 explores the theme “Body and Memory,” presenting landmark pieces of independent dance companies and choreographers. Scheduled on July 2 is a forum for dance billed as “In Conversation” to be held at 4:30 p.m. (CCP Tanghalang Aurelio Tolentino Lobby), followed by a photo exhibit and video portraits at 6:30 p.m. at the same venue featuring “Choreographed” by Paolo Picones and “Body Talks” by Ruelo Lozendo. At 8 p.m. (CCP Tanghalang Aurelio Tolentino) IndepenDANCE takes place featuring previous winners of the New Choreographers Competition, among them, Walk with Me (Ava Maureen Villanueva), Amidst Wanderings (Herbert Alvarez), Fickle-minded (Rhosam Prudenciado Jr.), Sloth (seven deadly sins…a sequel) by Christine Crame, Hilas and Elpidio (Gerardo Francisco), Untitled (Zyda Marie Baaya), and Pasaiyo (Johnny Amar). Another event titled “Dance-On-Site” happens at the CCP Main Theater Ramp at 9:30 p.m. featuring the UP Dance Company.

On July 3, audiences can check out the following activities: Choreographers Platform (3 p.m., CCP Tanghalang Aurelio Tolentino) presenting the Best of Romancon (St. Benilde Romancon Dance Co.) and the 2nd Uncensored Bodies Dance Video Competition to be held at 4:30 p.m. (CCP Tanghalang Manuel Conde). The New Choreographers Competition takes place at 8 p.m. (CCP Tanghalang Aurelio Tolentino), featuring Kulambo (Frederick Fernandez), Selda (Joseph de Guzman), Blur (Jhonalaine Panacad), Piswit (Peter Monteverde), Mitosis (Kristoffer Legarda), Due Date (Alfred Jan Mercado), Delight/Delirium (Nicole Primero) and Bad Dream (Stanley Macias). Dance-On-Site will be held at 9:30 p.m. (CCP Main Theater Ramp) featuring Rudolph Segundo & Seven Dance.

Come July 4, dance enthusiasts will witness the emerging talent showcase at 3 p.m. (CCP Tanghalang Aurelio Tolentino), to be participated in by Steps Dance Studio, Teatro Baile De Pilipinas & Dance Theatre Arts, Carmona Performing Arts Group, Marikina Ballet, Quezon City Ballet, Makiling Ballet, UP PEP Squad, Lyceum Dance Troupe, Siliman University Kahayag Dance Troupe, and BP Kidz, and the 2nd Uncensored Bodies Dance Video Competition at 4:30 p.m. held at the CCP Tanghalang Manuel Conde. At 8pm (CCP Tanghalang Aurelio Tolentino), the Wifi body Gala presents Transient (Mia Cabalfin, Airdance), Silhouettes (Elena Laniog, UP Dance Co.), Loro (Raul Alcoseba, Chameleon Dance Theatre), Gothic (Christine Crame, Seven Contemporary Dance Co.), Excerpt from “Sayaw, Sabel” (Agnes Locsin), T-zone (PJ Rebullida), Waltzes (Ava Maureen Villanueva and Elena Laniog), Impossible (Myra Beltran, Dance Forum MB) with the participation of Paul Morales & Ballet Philippines’ Jethro Pioquinto, also featuring the New Choreographers Competition 2010 winners. Last is Dance-On-Site to be held at the CCP Main Theater Lobby at 10 p.m. featuring Polecats and Party. Competition awards are supported by the CCP with Japan Foundation Manila.

The WiFi Body festival has grown since its inception in 2006, involving 232 dance artists in 20 dance organizations, with an average of 50 choreographers with 52 contemporary dance piece premieres a year.
