'Papet Asean 2010' in UP Diliman

-

MANILA, Philippines - For the first time in Pinoy theater history, Asian artists, experts and scholars on puppetry converge at the Asean Puppetry Festival dubbed “Papet Asean 2010: Celebrating Asean Puppet Traditions” slated from Feb. 24 to 26 in the University of the Philippines, Diliman, QC.

The three-day celebration, hosted by the country’s first organization of Filipino puppeteering groups (known as the Samahan ng mga Papetir ng Pilipinas), brings the artistry of puppet-theater to the fore as the different Asean puppet traditions vie for the spotlight.

On Feb. 24, puppets come alive at the festival opening, followed by 10 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. shows on Feb. 25 and 26 at the Abelardo Hall Auditorium, College of Music.

The festival features the Mascots and Puppets Specialists of Singapore; Pak Yusoff Mamat of Malaysia; Wayang Sandosa of Indonesia; Teatrong Mulat ng Pilipinas, Anino Shadowplay Collective, Ony Carcamo and Roppets Edutainment of the Philippines.

A seminar on puppetry-in-education is slated for Feb. 25.

“Papet Asean aims to create awareness and appreciation for the very rich and varied puppetry forms in the Asean region,” says Amihan Bonifacio-Ramolete, president of Samahan ng mga Papetir ng Pilipinas. “ASEAN puppeteers get to interact with their Philippine counterparts in this one-of-a-kind Asean puppet festival which will feature shadow plays on Feb. 25, and three-dimensional puppets on Feb. 26.”

The festival is supported by the Asean Foundation, Asean Puppetry Association, National Commission for Culture and the Arts, Unesco, the Quezon City government, Pagcor, Theater Lighting Technology, Royal Embassy of Cambodia, Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia, Embassy of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam and the University of the Philippines (Office of the President, Office of the Chancellor, Office for Initiatives in Culture and Arts, College of Arts & Letters, and the College of Music Department of Musicology.
