American conductor performs at CCP

MANILA, Philippines - The Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) presents noted American conductor Robert Rÿker in a special concert for the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra’s (PPO) second concert series slated on Oct. 8, 8 p.m. at the CCP Tanghalang Nicanor Abelardo (Main Theater). Other featured artists include the UP Singing Ambassadors, UST Singers and the Ateneo de Manila College Glee Club.

Program includes: Bach/Ryker’s Prelude and Fugue in E-flat major (on Saint Anne), BWV552, Brahm’s Variations on a Theme by Franz Joseph Haydn, Op. 56a, and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 in D minor (Choral), Op. 125.

 Robert Rÿker has appeared in over 50 cities on four continents. He is most active throughout the Asia-Pacific region, and serves as music director of the Tokyo Sinfonia and music advisor of the National Philharmonic of India.

Rÿker pursued professional studies in conducting in Europe with Igor Markevich, Herbert Blomstedt, Helmuth Rilling and Ilya Musin, and doctoral studies in America at the Peabody Conservatory of Music. He won first prizes in the 1974 Baltimore Symphony Conducting Competition and the 1975 National Symphonic Conducting Competition. A true renaissance man of music, he founded orchestras in Canada, India, and Japan, and has written over 300 musical arrangements. Maestro Rÿker has been recognized with awards, citations and grants from the Canada Arts Council, Québec Ministry of Cultural Affairs, United States Department of Defense, and Secretary of State of Canada. In 1996, he was knighted an Officer of the Knights Templar of Jerusalem for services to music. This is his second appearance with the PPO.

Ticket prices are P1,000, P800, P500, P350 and P200, with discounts available to students, senior citizens and groups. Subscription packages are also available.
