Emmanuel Garibay at the ArtistSpace

-

MANILA, Philippines - Emmanuel Garibay presents his recent works in oil on wood and canvas in “Laong Laan” which opens on July 30, 6:30 p.m., at the ArtistSpace of Ayala Museum. The show, a joint undertaking of Ayala Museum, Art Verite, and Artis Corpus Gallery, is on view until Aug. 12.

Jose Rizal used the penname Laong Laan in the 1890s when he wrote poems and articles for La Solidaridad, then the Propaganda Movement’s strongest voice. Literally, it means “reserved for a long time” and figuratively, it means “laging handa” or “ever ready.”

“Laong Laan,” the exhibit, carries with it similar meanings. It features works, which have remained in the artist’s studio waiting for their proper time, yet always ready for when such a time would come. The time is now and the only criterion used in the selection of works for this exhibition is relevance. They are editorials on the present.

Intrinsic in the works of Garibay are symbols, which carry multiple meanings. In his works, Garibay embellishes simple truths with satire and humor, sometimes with subtle sarcasm. Yet, the meanings of the artist’s works are deeply rooted in four decades of serious analysis. They emanate from a profound understanding of universal laws and human frailties. They are founded on a sincere compassion for humanity and its condition. Truth and its apparent duality are strikingly evident in “Laong Laan.”
